It was word from his sister that first made Sorrow establish contact, for he must have been too much of a coward to do so earlier. Her voice had been easy in his mind, but she might as well have screamed at him, for the impact of her words shortly numbed all his senses. At last Misery knew why she had no word from her friends, and so came a time that Sorrow brought news. He could not apologise for what he did, but the way he did it had been rather unpleasant and certainly it demanded fixing.

He had spent weeks in worry that Alexandra would refuse his attempt at redemption, and he could describe relief in colours when at last her reply reached him. Once time and place were set, Sorrow took a weekend to travel to London and at last meet the young woman he once liked to call his friend. He could only hope he had not lost her friendship irreversibly, when last he spoke harshly to her.

Snow had fallen thick over the outside areas, but it cleared quickly off the busy streets. Sorrow’s own coat was dusted with glistening white as he stood waiting on Leicester Square, shadowed by the looming statue of one William Shakespeare. The fountain beneath the statue was dry; frozen where the small pools of water had remained. Morning had grown late, with clouds hiding away any warmth the sun may have had to offer. It did not seem to matter, as winter often looked to be ruled by night anyway. Still it seemed somehow too bright for his eyes that were so used by dark; and Sorrow had sought shade under the shade of sky, and found them in shadows that drew thicker.

Being cold, nervous and something else that she couldn't quite put her finger on made Alexandra weary. This meeting had been a long time in coming but if it were not for her feeling that everything was slipping away from her, her pride and anger may have made her wait longer before scribbling out a reply to Sorrow. But it seems they had both changed from the pair that would watch the sun rise over Hogwarts in peaceful quiet. Alexandra could not even remember the last time she had done that. Or even been able to just speak and listen until her throat began to bleed as her tears dried. It was not her role to do that. She was the rock that people listened to for reason and calm. Her colleagues and few friends had worse to deal with and so she held her silence. Maybe that was why she was here despite everything.

She found him exactly where they'd agreed, his slender and tall figure uncomfortably familiar as she trudged through the snow. Whereas he may have to grace - haha, she thought dryly - to glide, Alexandra contented herself with less elegance as she formed her face to something approaching neutrality. There was so much weighing on this meeting but she could not force herself to forget him forbidding her to see Misery again. It disgusted her how much power he seemed to have over the friends she really needed. The Graces were the only ones she had outside the Order but with a sharp command, they had been taken from her. Or rather, he had forced her away. Alexandra did not know whether to hate him for doing that to her, or forgive him because she needed them.

When she reached the statue, Alexandra simply stood in front of him, watching him in silence as her steel grey eyes blankly took him in. It should not have surprised her that he had not changed at all but it did. How could she have changed so much yet see him look like he let time flow around him?
She continued to wait, her breath steaming as it rose through the air.

The play of emotions that Alexandra could masterfully hide from her eyes, but not her being, washed over Sorrow like a cold wave. He knew he did not deserve better but to feel worse, which made him all the more eager to repair what he had broken. Trust had been lost perhaps, and it would take patience to find it again. He thought he had the patience and hoped he had the courage too.

She looked older than he remembered, not by much, but enough to make a difference. There were tiny lines on her face that had not been there before, and fading circles around her eyes, a reminder of many restless nights when sleep lingered tauntingly, yet offered no comfort in dreams.

“Good afternoon, Alexandra,” he spoke softly, as he always did. There was the indicated bow of his head and then the grey of his own eyes reflected in hers. With his arm he proposed a direction. “Shall we retreat to someplace warmer?”
