| Eleanie’s peace and tranquility was shattered in an instant. In the morning brisk, instead of serving up breakfast in the Great Hall, she instead found herself along the outskirts of the Entrance Courtyard, where the cobble stones meet the open grounds of Hogwarts. She was curled up on one of the benches, with a book propped open against her knees. At first she read word after word, line after line, and page after page, but after a while the book held no interest for her. Instead she watched the warmth of her breath getting swept away by the winter winds. It was peaceful. It was quite. The only sound she registered was the rustling of her clothes and air escaping from her lungs.
But that all changed as the heavy double doors open and students started spilling out to enjoy the nice winter morning. She watched them as they spread out, some leaving the Courtyard to open grounds, while others lingered, chatting away to their group of friends. Over the top of her book, she watched every single one of them as if they were a threat to her existence, especially her brother, Kaden Carr.
The cold chill that hardly affected other people, made it impossible to breath with Kaden. It was like knives burrowing into his skin, inching away until it felt like his heart was about to stop, than burst apart. He forced himself to take short shallow breaths and disguised his ailment with a gentle smile, as he watched Markus run in circles chasing his girlfriend around. It was in good humor, lots of laughter was involved but Kaden was more reserved than usual.

| Jett was hurrying from one destination to another, parchment and books held casually in hand, head held high and thoughts focused within. He had things that needed to be tended to; books to read and papers to write, all of which could only happen after he made his way back to the library. Unfortunately the path there from his previous location lead through the courtyard, out in the cold air. Despite his last name, Jett was not overly fond of the season that was now covering the castle and grounds with a sparkling frost.
Little puffs of white escaped his lips as he breathed out and Jett rose a hand to adjust the striped scarf that was wrapped tightly around his neck in an attempt to keep close the heat of his body. As he neared the castle doors he spotted a group of students meandering about, taking time away from their studies to enjoy the bit of freedom the morning allowed. Jett had no desire to join in and was all but across the courtyard when he spotted a familiar face seated alone nearby. His eyes took in way Eleanie was watching the others, a grim look on her face. Without much hesitation Jett turned away from the doors and the promise of warmth to walk confidently over to Eleanie. After the awkward moment in the Great Hall just before the Yule Ball Jett had been meaning to speak to Eleanie alone, in order to apologize for his behavior and make amends, but had yet to see her around the castle at all. Today was a rare occasion and he felt the need to take advantage of it. His studying would just have to wait a while longer.
An easy smile came to his lips as he approached her, looking friendly and harmless. “Good morning. Quite a cold day to be reading outdoors, isn’t it? I hope you're not catching a chill.”

| For far too long, Eleanie watched her brother move about the courtyard. There was no end to Kaden’s easy going smile, his friendly nod to everyone that walked by. He was the type of person who loved, and was well loved by everyone he met. Behind that façade smile of his, Eleanie saw his illness taking hold. The flash of terror in his eyes only for a moment as he tells himself to take another breath, the lockjaw he sometimes got when he thought no one was looking, these were all signs of the winter claiming Eleanie’s brother as one of her victims and Eleanie just sat there, flipping the page of her book.
Her attention did not last long on the book she was reading, because the next time she glanced up Jett Winters was crossing her path. “Veela,” she muttered underneath her breath with much disdain as she could muster. It was as if she followed his train of thought each step he took towards the doors to Hogwarts castle. ‘Work. Papers. Study.’ That was all he ever did, when she caught herself watching him in the Library, in the North Wing, at the Ravenclaw table during breakfast. The only time he was pulled away from his studies was his sick fascination in one girl or another.
That fascination reared its ugly head as they locked eyes with each other. She did not hide the fact that she was staring, as if she was ashamed of it. In fact, she pulled her book away from her face, and stared even more. Her face was hard set, and she glared the whole time he was coming towards her with that cheeky smile. It disgusted her. He disgusted her. “What do you want,” she said not as heated as she wanted it to be, feeling the Veela magic sipping into her skin, breathing it in like poisonous vapors.

| Instead of answering his casual question, and instead even of greeting him in a friendly or polite manner, Eleanie demanded of Jett a reason for his appearance, as if he was not capable of having no motive other than wanting an amiable conversation. The unspoken accusation stung and Jett was hurt that she should think so lowly of him, but he did his best to brush it off and keep the charming smile glued to his lips, unfaltering.
He would not allow her apathy to faze him, but instead use it as goal. He would, even if it was not this day, break through her thick skin and view the girl that he assumed was underneath. All it would take was time and confidence in his abilities to win people over, of which Jett was in no way lacking.
“I merely thought I would say good morning and inquire how you are doing. I have not seen you around lately and found myself worried over your well-being.” Here Jett paused to bestow a warm smile of concern to Eleanie, knowing full well its intended effect would be lost on her. “I hope you can tell me my unease is not warranted.”

| Jenessa, Markus’ girlfriend, Jen for short, thwarted Markus’ attempts to pin her down as they both ran across the slippery stone courtyard. They zig and zag through groups of Hogwarts students, several Durmstrang students in their deep Russian accent told them off, but they were having too much fun to listen or care. Jen let loose a scream, only because Markus was closing in on her, but he only caught air, where once Jen was moments before. Instead of surrendering, she made a beeline straight to Kaden. Still in a full run, she interlaced her arm with his, forcing him into a trot. “Protect me from him,” she said half hysterical with laughter.
Every step Kaden took sent shooting pain up his legs, and the metaphoric knife spoken of earlier, dig itself deeper into his chest. His face became washed out, even a bit blue in places as he remain by Jen’s side still in a full run. A brave face was all he had left in him. The plain smile was all he could mustered, as he forced himself, and Jen to a slower pace than stop altogether.
All he could do to keep himself upright was lean against a pillar, barely registering that he was with other people, or that he was a few yards near his sister.
Eleanie’s anger maintain her, kept her from losing herself from Jett’s charm, preventing him from plunging her into being his puppet. But she also could feel the anger ebbing away, dissipating over time. If the conversation last for any more amount of time than necessary, she would be lost to him. Looking at the crowd, instead of Jett, made it easier for her to be her cold, cynical self. “Your feelings are warranted but unwanted.”
“Look around and what do you see?” she asked scanning the crowd as if pinpointing the problems surrounding her. Sneers and dirty looks followed her as Hogwarts students passed on by. Comments inaudible from this distance were obviously towards her. There was pointing and laughing following her were ever she went, this was one of the reasons she found solace in uncommon places.

| A small pack of students roaming through the flock seemed to catch Eleanie's gaze, and one kid nudged another, and shortly after, it seemed the pack took a detour, making their way straight for the Hogwarts Champion. The one leading the excursion, a tall, slim, brunette boy seemed to be the eldest of the bunch, and held a certain superiority over them. With his bright green eyes, and sly smirk, even without his school robes he just simply emanated Slytherin. Most of the others were in the same boat, though there was a Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff among them. The Hufflepuff, a boy much younger than the rest, had his arms wrapped around two of his over-sized textbooks as he clumsily tried to keep up. Though he seemed fairly timid and he kept his head down for the most part, he closely resembled the older Slytherin- obviously they were related someway, likely brothers. The younger of the two siblings, however, appeared to be roughly in his third year. The Ravenclaw recognized Jett as they approached, and offered him a curt nod of acknowledgment.
"Well if it isn't the Hogwarts Champion herself," the lead Slytherin called; as he got closer, and made sure he had her attention, he added, "Nice work on that first task- I could have done better, but, you gave it your best shot, right?" His smirk spread from ear to ear, as the rest of the pack broke off in their chuckles; all except the young Hufflepuff, at least.
The young boy gawked for a moment, after his brother established that Eleanie was the champion, and the kid grinned, "Wow, you're the Champion? That's so cool!"
"Shut up, Fergus," his brother gave him a sharp look, before turning back to Eleanie. It wouldn't take much to get her fired up, and the Slytherin was practically begging for a fight- his wand itched for a good- unsupervised- duel, and who would be a more worthy opponent than the Champion herself? Not to mention how simple it would be to draw her in. He gave a light smile before speaking again, "Such a waste of a tournament with you in the running- may as well just hand that trophy to Durmstrang and save everyone the trouble. Don't you think?" He directed his question to the Ravenclaw beside him, who scratched his chin in thought. The gleam in his eyes already showed his answer though.

| Jett deigned to look around the courtyard where Eleanie indicated, unsure of what exactly she expected him to see. All around were students fooling around, in particular a girl running around arm in arm with another, but Jett paid them little heed. If truth be told he believed their behavior beneath him; there was a time in life to act your age and it was fast approaching many of the older students at the school, though they seemed determined to ignore it. It was then that a group of students, aimlessly wandering in the cold morning, made an apparent b-line in their direction.
As they approached Jett turned slightly from Eleanie to greet them, recognizing only the Ravenclaw boy, who was in the same year. “Good morning Riley,” he said easily, withholding his judgment of the company he was keeping for now. He was quick to change his view as obvious taunts and provocations spewed forth from the bright eyed Slytherin who seemed to be the ring leader of the little group.
Jett took a step forward, a confident glint in his eyes and his hand opened in a gesture of familiarity. “I'm sure Eleanie is more than capable, she was chosen for a reason, after all. Perhaps you should consider the strengths she has that you may be unaware of before passing verdict upon her.” His voice was casual and even, attempting to appeal to the Slytherin's sense of humility, if he had one. Jett saw no need for this altercation to escalate, and he felt the desire to shield Eleanie from the boorish accusations of lesser students. Call it playing the prince, but he could not stand for witnessing a strong girl such as Eleanie being abused in any medium.

| Blotches of lights danced in front of him. They first turn green, then pink then blue as if it was his own personal light show. At least he did not succumb to the black outline that swallowed his peripherals. All, he could do to push off collapsing was take one breath, and then another and another, trying to focus on the tangible of reality than blacking out. As his sight began to clear, he saw Markus next to him with a furrowed brow. Concerns etch into every corner of his face, but no one seemed to notice except of Kaden. Jen attention was diverted somewhere else, more like someone else. “Hi, Jett,” she said with a lilt in her voice, combing her fingers through her honeysuckle hair.
Kaden dissuaded Markus if only slightly by saying, “I am fine. It happens all the time,” he said through haggard breaths, “ and plus-“ He turn to look at the growing numbers surrounding not only Jett, but to his surprise his sister as well. Markus attention diverted as well looking into the throng of people. Jen was one of them, turning a pinkish color as her eyes sparkle for no one except Jett and Eleanie beside herself with anger, a powder cag ready to explode. Kaden did not need to finish his sentence; Markus put two and two together, knowing full well that Kaden would not leave his sister to bullies. All he did was nodded that he understood, and whispered, “Just be careful.” He pulled himself away from Kaden reluctantly and moved towards Jen, wrapping his bulky arms around her slim waist. “Come on Hon,” he said pulling her to the archway of the open ground. “It’s time to stop gawking at the love machine and smooch in the greenhouse.”
That made her turn bright red of embarrassment, even to the point of hiding her face with one of her long sleeves. Even Kaden could not suppress a smirk that did not held for too long as he heard the ringleader, a Slytherin no less, speak. He remained silent, where he stood, knowing this wasn’t the time to intervene.
Eleanie’s gloss over faces as if her she had a foe glass as her inner eye. The people walking to and fro from one place to another, they remain hidden in shadow, surrounded in fog. No one manifested themselves as a threat until a gang of pompous, overconfident Hogwarts students nonchalantly and brazenly came up to Eleanie and started to harass her.
God damn it. She wanted to be left alone. Was that too much to asked? Jett, who tried to sweet talk his way into her life and now this? Her patients were wearing thin. Instead of getting up to great her guess, she remain seated, opening up her Divination’s book as if she could not be bothered with such lowly filth. “And you are who exactly?” she asked, appealing to his vanity. “You know who I am, but I don't know a thing about you. I guess the Goblet of Fire forgot your name or it saw you as a talentless hack.”
As Jett came to her aid, Eleanie refrain from snide remarks, even though it was as much his fault as it was theirs for bothering her in the first place.
She flipped the page, now in a new chapter discerning palm readings.
