Befuddlement Drought

Years: 4th-7th
Date Friday (7/12)-Sunday (7/14)

This class is going to be taught a little bit different to other classes. I am trying this because I know a few, like me, want to have more classes that feels like it’s going in depth into the world of J.k. Rowling's H.P. Series.

1. Classes for Potions will take place the whole weekend. This is to promote people who are promptly swept away from the computer by a mother, or some other natural catastrophe. (I am kidding of course.)

2. Attendance is not mandatory, but those who do attended and still does not complete in the time frame I give will be subjected to consequences (For the most part loss of House Points).
3. Role play as you see fit. If I am not on, continue rping if I was on. All I asked is that when I posted the step by step instructions to make a potion, you do one (or two) step(s) at a time, (putting your creative flair of writing into the post) and not all the steps in one post.

4. Also like Harry, Ron, Hermonie, you are free to interact with others while making the potion. Giving help, or being a bother to your neighbor.

5. When finish with assignment you can leave whenever you want, but turn it into Luke's front desk. (Note: No extra house points will be given to those who finish it on Friday while others finish it later on.)

6. Some have issues rping two places at once, but because it is a three day long class, you can rp in two places at once.

7. Have fun.

Grading System:

-At the end of each class, I will give you a grade on how well you made your potion. Know this though, if your Character is Neutral, or have a Weakness in potions, they will not be as well of as those who either have strength in potions, or has their story plot connected in Potions.

It goes like this:
Story line > Strength > Neutral > Weakness

(Note: this does not mean you won't get a passing score, it means that like in reality you struggle.)

O- Outstanding: +15 House Points (Think Snape, and his abilities.)
E- Exceeds Expectations: +10 House Points (A few will be here.)
A- Acceptable: +1 to +5 house points (Most will be here)
P- Poor- -5 house points (If weakness is potions it can be boarder line Poor to Acceptable)
I- Incomplete- -5 house points (Not finishing assignment)
T- Troll- -15 house points (the only ones who will get troll if they deliberately in a post messes up. Think of Neville and his cauldron melting.)

(Note: Luke, like everyone, is biased. He will be harsher on some students, and lighter on others.)

Safety Precautions in Potion Class

1. Follow instructions
2. No rough housing
3. Use gloves when dealing with dangerous potions or ingredients
4. Be aware of your surroundings
5. Use caution when cutting ingredients
6. Know the properties of the igredients you use and potions you make
7. Have someone else around just in case
8. Also, No, and I mean no one, is to bring any type of contraband into Potion class. No food. No drink. No fireworks of any kind. No dungbombs, or projectiles. Nothing on the Contraband list held in the Caretakers office.

If caught breaking any of those rules: Detention, -20 house points, and "Troll" on the assignment.

Austen was not your average Hogwarts Professor. Even the thought of being called “Professor” was distasteful. All the eager, bright eyed students looking up to him for guidance and he attempting to fill their heads with information not only about potions but the real world as well, it was something he appalled above all else. This job was basically paid glorified babysitting, and Austen hated babies. To reject their reality and substitute his own, he adorned regular shirt and slacks as protest.

One thing he hated more than being thought of as an authority figure was boredom. Sitting here, waiting for class to start, Austen sat behind his desk with a quill out. For a time he twirled it around and around between his figures, but that did not last very long. He stood up and walked several times around his classroom, ignoring the banging sounds coming from the Stockroom closet, but that did not hold his interest either. Everything was practically done for the next double potions class, and now all he had to do was wait. The multiple chalk boards were filled with the brim of instructions, all the material the students needed to do the Befuddlement Potion was already set out against the back wall away from him so he did not have to smell the students’ body odor, and he brought a special guess, which was rattling away once more in the stockroom. Now all he needed was Children.

Next thing he knew, Austen was using his quill to etch his initials “A.W.” into the professor’s desk. It was an old habit he picked up during his years at Hogwarts. Numerous places, not only desk around Hogwarts but walls and inside cabinets had his initial etch, scorched, or placed on it by forms of enchantment because of William’s boredom, and Austen got bored a lot.

Jett aimed to be bright and early to Potions today. He didn't particularly care for the subject any more than was necessary, but seeing as it was the first class he wanted to take the time to make a good impression on the professor. He sauntered through the underground corridors and headed for the Potions room door. Upon entering he gave the room his customary inspection, taking in all the ingredients and labeled instructions. Everything seemed laid out as if to guide the students through the potion with their hands held tight. Jett wondered if the professor was going to ramble on before class or let them get straight to it. He hoped the latter.

Stopping his gaze at a man lounging in the desk up front Jett smiled and nodded in his direction. He did not let the disdain he felt over the professors casual attire cross his face. This man was being paid to teach and be an authority figure, he could at least look the part. His bored expression made Jett more than a little irked, getting the feeling once again that he would have to do most of his learning on his own this year.

"Good morning Professor, I'm Jett Winters. I've been looking forward to your class." He used the line again, the same one he had used one each professor so far. Taking a seat Jett looked to the board again, beginning to memorize the detailed instructions.

It was no secret that Emma's worst subject was Potions. In fact, the progress she made to the classroom was slow, as she tried to nail some optimism into her head. Maybe the potion today wouldn't even explode! It could have been the simplest potion ever, and Emma was just worrying about nothing. Besides, she had the greatest Professor ever to help her! Luke was the one reason she hadn't just given up on the class entirely. Even if Emma screwed everything up, he was still her good friend, and always tried to help her bounce back. She just had this fear, that whenever she added something to the cauldron, something horrible would go wrong.

In light of Professor Brown, Emma was accompanied by her small mouse, Rook, who was currently buried in the hood of her robe. She could feel him squirming around, and his company brought her some form of comfort to her. If she could just get through the day without her cauldron exploding, she would be okay.

As she made her way around the corner and to the ever so familiar door, carrying her cauldron in one hand, filled with tools, and her book in the other, she entered through the door, and stopped in her tracks. It was a trick, right? Luke was giving the class a taste of what the Polyjuice Potion was like, right? A review or something like that, right? But as she stood in the doorway, and looked at the board, she failed to notice anything mentioning the polyjuice potion.

They had a sub? It was so rare that such things happened at this school, so how long was Luke going to be gone? She was saddened that her old friend would be gone, but also, she was afraid of what that meant both for her grade, and future potion classes. She didn't want to feel any more stupid than she already had, so she took her seat, a few rows back, and set down her cauldron. Today was not going to be a good day after all.

Claudia quite enjoyed Potions. It was one that she did fairly well in. She walked down to the Potions classroom rather slowly. When she finally reached the class room she acknowledged the Professor. He looked like he would rather not be here. He didn't even look the part of a Professor. If you asked her he looked rather inprofessional. While he was here he could have atleast looked more professional.
She then found a seat near the middle of the room. She began to survey the room carefully, taking in each little detail. She then gave Jett a small smile and gave a small wave to the Gryffindor girl that she didn't remember the name of before looking over all of the instructions on the board. She hoped that this class was not going to be a total disaster.

Theo started her new year with a very determined thought to break the habit of being late to her classes. Potions especially. Luke’s words had stuck with her and she had had a whole summer to think about them; she sat through Gran’s critiques with a straight face and never once thought about pranking to relieve her stress. Her creations had been brought down to a minimum as well. She worked only with materials she researched prior to sinking them in to her cauldron, and when Muffle told her she seemed more mature it gave her an odd sense of pride. She was going to show this mature side to Luke as well and he would lift her ban from the dungeons in the not-class hours and everything would be right in the world again. Except, it was not professor Brown who waited to hold class when Theo came in.

She considered three minutes and not running in like a psycho a sort of an accomplishment. She gave a light knock on the door and carried in with a smile, only to pause in the doorway once she noted the strange person at the front desk. She had half a mind to turn around and walk away, thinking she had wandered into the wrong class. But this was the one potions classroom. And there were no two potions professors.

This was a problem. This was so much of a problem that Theo didn’t know how to express the magnitude of this fucking problem. Of course Luke had no obligation to tell her he was leaving. But last year was a mess. The last they spoke he yelled at her, and then Theo sat through the last of his classes silently. She had wanted to talk to him properly, but the year ended all too soon and she hadn’t the time. And now he was no longer here. It was like the whole of Hogwarts suddenly turned upside-down, so it seemed to Theo.

Austen etched out a perfect A into the top of the wood desk and he was working on the W when the door to the back of the classroom creek open and in walked a Ravenclaw. Even before the boy open his mouth, an enchanted parchment before him jotted down his name, Jett Winters, his year, 6th year, and his house, Ravenclaw. It was a handy little spell Austen created himself because he was poor at associating names with faces. “Nice to meet you Jett,” he said propping his feet up on the desk, and leaning back in his chair.

Jett Winter hided his disgust of Austen peculiar relaxed nature well, but not all of it could be hidden away. It was all in his stiff features and cold eyes as he took his seat. The door open and Emma Hawkwood, or so it said on the parchment, came in. This time her disliking for Austen was anything but discrete, and so was Claudia Evens. Could he not find anyone in Hogwarts that find his demeanor amusing, or even carefree? When Theodora Grey blocked the doorway taking in the Austen, he could not help but think to himself, Good Grief! Is everyone a prude at Hogwarts?

He could understand the Ravenclaws, because they needed order and structure with everything they do, the Gryffindors were arrogantly prideful, they could never show descent in their Gryffindor ranks, but the Hufflepuffs? They were usually open minded and trusting, not this one. Her Laffy Taffy hair stated otherwise but Austen thought her panties were in a twist seeing how agitated she got at the sight of him. “Theodora, take your seat,” he said hopping to his feet to get started.

As if that was a cue the door to stockroom violently rattled, sending the dust in the creases of the ceiling to ran down. Austen ignored it. “My name is Austen Williams. I am a Hufflepuff and I graduated with Eirina Naer.” He stopped suddenly and raised one finger. “I will say this once and only once, call me Austen. Not professor, nor sir. Got that? Good.” He walked around his desk to just sit on top of it, pushing back books and quills and other things that the last professor left behind.

“Your last professor, Luke has gone on sabbatical and at the request of your wicked Headmistress, Eirina, I will be filling in.” Even though he said Eirina was wicked, his tone in his voice and his features did not translate as such. He was rather smitten of her. “Please don’t ask me when your uptight professor will be back. I have no clue. It could be six months, A year, or never seeing as how easily people turn up missing all the time during sabbatical.”

Alyssa walked to her class without pause, randomly bumping into people and not caring.  She suddenly sighed and in an instant, she was standing next to the door to the Potions Room.  Mysteriously, she was hovering a few inches off the ground.  She quickly landed and entered the room.  Her first glance showed that plenty of people were there, mostly about her age or a little younger.  Potions wasn't her worst or her best subject.  Neither was it something she enjoyed, it was just something that was kind of there that she had to put up with.  Next, she focused on the teacher.  Obviously, Professor Brown was absent, and a substitute was covering for him.  The sub was dressed casually, and Alyssa was halfway glad even though it was probably against the rules.  Someone needed to be more relaxed and carefree once in a while.  She walked to the back of the room and dropped her bag on the floor next to a desk.  She wondered what they would be making today, and decided to ask someone.

Turning towards the two Gryffindors she had met in the courtyard recently, she asked, "Hi, do you guys happen to know what we'll be making today?  And do you know who's subbing for Professor Brown?" She thought back to the other classes. He appeared to be nothing like this sub, and she was wondering how the class would go. There was an older Hufflepuff girl also here, and another Ravenclaw boy, that Jett person. She remembered Emma Hawkwood from Quidditch as well. Alyssa winced as she remembered her failed attempts at flying on a broomstick.

She looked over at the Ravenclaw. "I really don't know what we will be making. He wants to be called Austen." She didn't really care. She leaned back in her chair and took a loud sigh. She hoped he was a good Professor. Really all that mattered was how good of a teacher he was. She began drawing on the desk. Might as well do something to occupy her time.

Jett's eyes didn't leave the front board until he was certain he had the steps for the potion set in his mind and wouldn't have to keep looking back and wasting time. He then turned to see who had entered the class while he was concentrating. He immediately spotted Claudia and gave her a big smile. He was glad to see her here, perhaps he would work next to her today. That crazy Ravenclaw girl who had thrown dirt at him was here as well and he gave her a customary nod. He would stay away from her, her mood swings much too distracting when he was trying to learn. How was she in Ravenclaw anyway? Two more students he hadn't met were sitting around as well, both looking the the professor suspiciously. He heard Alyssa whisper about him being a sub, that this was not their usual professor. Jett felt that was no reason to be rude and talk behind his back like that, but paired with his attire it was more forgivable.

As the professor started his beginning of class speech Jett could hardly keep his pleasant smile plastered to his face. This man was being completely unprofessional. What was the headmistress thinking when she hired him? Even the way he spoke had cadences more similar to a teenager than an adult. How was one supposed to learn anything from someone who they could not respect? Jett tried to rationalize the situation. Perhaps his skill with potions was unheard of it. He would wait and see if that were true, the only thing that would restore a semblance of respect in Jett.

Irene seemed to be coming late to all her classes this week.  Trying to keep a bright smile on her face, she walked into the classroom and tried to find a seat as quickly as possible.  She ended up sitting in the front, which was her least preferable spot.  She was rather bad at Potions, so she would rather be sitting in the back where she would be less likely to be called on.  She wondered where the professor was.  There was a man dressed casually and out of code standing in the front, talking, but he couldn't be the professor, could he?  Whatever.  It didn't matter to Irene what the professor looked like.  She supposed that if he was a good teacher, that was all that mattered, right?

She pulled out her wand and traced a firebird on the back of her hand.  It glowed red on her pale skin.  She always did magic during class, because magic wasn't allowed in the corridors.  This was the only place to do it.  Potions were fun, but really hard.  She had once made a potion that accidentally exploded and set the room on fire, which was fun but it had earned her a detention having to clean it up and a lower grade.  House points had also been deducted.  Some people considered Irene sort of a troublemaker, but she just loved to fool around with magic and such.

About the same number of people were here as were in her charms class, and she decided to study them again.  She loved trying to guess people's emotions.  One Ravenclaw sixth or seventh year was looking annoyed at the professor.  She supposed that he was like, proper about everything and was angry about the professor's casualness.  Before that, he'd been nodding to the other Ravenclaw, trying to conceal his annoyance at her being here too.  But he'd smiled at the Gryffindor girl before that.  The girl was very friendly, Irene knew, from her other classes.  She hoped they'd become friends.  Unlike in Charms, there was a Hufflepuff girl here, who also looked very angry about something.  Irene thought it was probably the professor.  The Hufflepuff was an older girl, a seventh year probably.  Many other Gryffindors were here, and they were also whispering and proabably gossiping about the professor.  Irene didn't do gossiping.  It just wasn't something she'd picked up on.  Most of them also looked annoyed, except for the first Gryffindor fifth year, and an older Ravenclaw girl.  She decided that she liked the Gryffindor very much and wanted to get to know her.  SHe seemed to be smart and quick thinking, but still relaxed and not uptight and princessy.

PostSubject: Re: Befuddlement Drought (4th-7th years)    Befuddlement Drought (4th-7th years) EmptySat Jul 13, 2013 8:27 pm

Austen ignored Irene Moore who slithered in late, and continued with his lesson, but nothing really came to him. The board had everything written clear as day on the board, and if these students could not read than to bad. He was about to let the class begin, but with Irene who was plain as day performing magic on the back of her hand, and Jett who ignored Austen completely. These were spoiled little Teenagers and he would not treat them as such.

Even if he wasn’t a Legilimency beginning practitioner, he could see their doubts on their furrowed brows, and their misgivings on the tips of the lips. Austen must show them the awesomeness that is Austen Williams, after all he was egotistical narcissist genius. “Yes before we get started, my credentials?” He said getting off the table and back around the desk opening almost every drew looking for what he wanted to show the class. When he found part of the stuff he was looking for he tossed it on the already messed up desk. “I have a 160 IQ, more brilliant than all of you put together. In my first three years of Hogwarts I learn how to make every potion by memory taught at Hogwarts. I have been credited four times in four different books,” He lifted up four different books that had fine gold lettering down the spine in perfect condition. He set that aside and picked up three magazines, “and three magazines. I have researched and created 3 new potions, and 1 cosmetic, If you have any doubts on my ability to be a potion professor pushed that out of your mind, because I am brilliant!”

He might have been brilliant but he acted as a kid, juggling his four concoctions he created himself, two of them if mixed together would produce deadly gas that would kill everyone in the room. He did not care nor did the creature in the Storeroom closet who beat against the door loudly. In between juggling potions and ignoring the rattling for now, he looked at the students in his classroom and they all stared back at him. “You know you can begin,” Austen said. This is going to be one long year, he thought to himself, if these students were this slow.

Befuddlement Draught

Ingredients- Cochlearia Officinalis, Smoke of a Hinkypunk, standard potion ingredient, Juniperus Berries, Valeriana Officinalis, Levisticum Offcinale, Sneeze wart

Instructions
1. Fill the pewter cauldron with 2 liters of water, and gently heat over a medium flame. If under heating the Befuddlement Draught will not likely set well and separation will occur. Overheating will cause the potion to burn making it useless.
2. While letting the cauldron to heat up just under a boil, take a mortar and piston and grind up 1 gram of standard potion ingredients with five pieces of Cochlearia Officinalis until it is a fine powder. Fresh Cochlearia Officinalis best allowing the water retains in the grass infused easily into the Befuddlement draught, but dried grass will work just as well.
3. Turn heat of when bubbles start to appear.
4. Pour the mixture into the cauldron and let it sink to the bottom before stirring rapidly counter clockwise 8 times. Before the solution settles down add the tea spoon of Sneeze Wart. After that stir again this time clockwise 8 times.
5. Tap your wand against the surface of the Draught and let stand for 10 minutes. Start the next processes to soon and the Draught will yield a weaker version of the Befuddlement Draught. If left on too long the potion will cause serious swelling of the brain. Once cooled to room temperature, the potion should change from a clear liquid to a murky yellow color.
6. Take three all equal size pieces of the Levisticum Offcinale leaves and toss them in the cauldron. White smoke should appear once the leaves hit the surface of the Drought denigrating them in minutes. If black smoke appears the potion is useless. Start Over.
7. Once the smoke clears add two sprigs of Valeriana Officinalis and Juniperus (blue) Berries to the cauldron. Leave them for five minutes, or until the berries turn white, and the potion turns a a clear but green tint.
8. Use a slotted spoon and scoop up what is left of the Valeriana Officinalis and Juniperus Berries and discard them.
9. Tap wand against the surface of the Befuddlement Drought. The Drought is ready to be tested. Any Volunteers?

Irene smirked.  She hadn't cared about his credentials, but that he felt the need to mention them was interesting.  His IQ was high, but she bet some of the Ravenclaws' might be higher than his, they just hadn't gotten tested yet.  She herself hadn't been tested either.  After making his speech, he had seemed to think that they all were stupid, and she was determined to prove him wrong.  Irene squinted at the board.  The instructions looked complex and confusing, and there was definitely a reason Potions was one of her worst subjects.

She emptied all the ingredients out of her cauldron and set it over the burner thingy.  She muttered something and a perfect medium flame popped up.  Irene glanced around, making sure that no one had seen her.  She picked up the ingredients that had been dumped on the floor and spread them out on her desk, searching for the mortar and piston.  She found the packet of pre-organized standard potion ingredients and then began to look for the Cochlearia Officinalis.  She had picked it fresh last night from her mini-greenhouse garden, wanting her potion to turn out the best possible.  Even though Irene wasn't exactly a star pupil in Herbology, she liked to have fresh ingredients if possible when it came to Potions. It made up a little for her obvious in-adeptness in the subject. She carefully counted out five pieces, then ground it all together until it was fine dust.  She hoped she'd gotten it right.  It was kind of damp but mostly dry and unappealing.  She waited impatiently for the professor to take a look.

While Irene was waiting, she doodled on her arms, drawing red glowing swirls and gold symbols.  She had never liked Ancient Runes, because the teacher told her that her symbols were nonsense and that she couldn't permit them in the class.  She'd received a D for the term.  Now, she still had an intense dislike of Ancient Runes and hoped that Potions would be at least a little better.

Professor...no, Austen, was juggling some vials and books in his hand, rattling off IQ numbers and generally behaving like some kind of small monkey. Jett leaned in forward to catch the names of the books as their lettering glittered in gold. He quickly wrote them down in order to check them out from the library later that day. He no longer doubted Austen's ability and despite his appearance deserved Jett's respect. That didn't mean he wouldn't be furthering his knowledge of the professor's career though. He liked to know as much as he could about people, just in case.

As the all clear was given Jett pulled out his gloves and slipped them on before doing anything else. Better safe than sorry and he didn't moisturize his hands just for them to be burned in a potions class. After gathering his ingredients he moved his cauldron and bag over next to Claudia, greeting her with a his usual charm. "Do you mind if I work near you? I was really pleased to see we were in a few of the same classes." He really was, too. Plus this gave him the opportunity to observe her behavior around others in order to ascertain his suspicions.

Pulling out his wand Jett filled first a beaker with two liters of water, then poured the contents of the beaker into his cauldron. He let the flame ignite beneath it and watched for a moment as the small flame gradually got larger and began to heat. Satisfied it would reach the desired temperature soon after he was finished with the next step he looked away and picked up his small marble mortar and pestle. He was always very accurate with his measurements in potions, knowing full well that even a gram of a mistake might literally blow up in his face. Feeling a little abashed at his thoughts of the professor at the beginning of class he wanted to be certain his potion came out perfect today to make up for it. With that in mind he measured one gram of standard potion ingredients on his scale before tipping it into the bowl. Unfortunately he didn't have fresh Cochlearia Officinalis. He would never have been able to keep it in good condition if he had, winding up with broken pieces or turned to dust. So instead he took the five dried pieces and combined it with the standard and began to grind into a fine ash like powder.

Looking back at the flame under his cauldron and the bubbles forming in the water, Jett decided it was time for the next step. He glanced over at Claudia beside him, making sure she was doing well. If she had any problems he would be happy to help her, but he didn't take any of his time away from his potion to see how the other students were faring.

Claudia smirked to herself. "Conceited much." She whispered to herself about the professor or Austen as he wants to be called. She was putting her gloves on when she noticed that Jett had moved over next to her. "I don't mind at all."
She then became completely focused. Nothing was going to mess her up.

She filled her Cauldron with 2 liters of water and put it over a medium flame. As the Cauldron heated up she got her Mortar and pestle. She double-checked the amount of ingredients. Rather be safe than sorry. She put them into the Mortar than reached for five pieces of Cochlearia Officinalis and began to grind all if it up until it was a fine powder.
She waited until she saw the water begin to bubble. She always loved the sight of bubbling water. She guessed it was just something that came with her love of Potion-Making.

Okay. Theo couldn't help but stare at the sub, her expression calculating, lips pulled into a tight line. Her eye twitched when he called her by her full name and she did not sit down. She stood through his little speech, course of which seemed more ridiculous with every next word he spoke. But as upset as Theo was that Luke wouldn't be there to see her graduate with a blast, she couldn't afford to waste time crying over it. No, there was so much to do in that precious time left of her Hogwats years.

Her eyes flickered to the blackboard, scanning over the usual safeties. Nothing new, not really. Number eight, however, did make her crack a smile. Theo looked at the students next, spotting not so much as a familiar face. She couldn't guess their years, didn't even care to try. Their heads were only good for one thing anyway. Target practice.

And back to the sub. Her lips only curled more when he announced his one-sixty as brilliant. It wasn't as high an accomplishment as he reckoned, but at least the actual number wasn't lower than his shoe size. Probably. Memorizing potions? Easy peasy. Theo started memorizing her ingredients when she was five, thanks to Muffle. Of course she had years one to three stacked neatly in the tiny drawers inside her head. Those were easy work. She couldn't count her inventions on fingers of just one hand and, as silly as some might have been, Theo was proud of each. Just as this funny-bunny sub was proud of his book mentions.

“All right,” she said, loud enough so this Austen person would hear her. The signature Cheshire grin stretched over her thin lips. Her bright yellow bag dropped on the floor, pink hair bobbed on her head as she nodded, and one skinny arm extended towards the professor as Theo pointed. She didn’t know what the banging noise was, but it gave for good dramatic effect. “Yes, you’re brilliant. Worthy of applause,” she brought her arm back, flattened her palms and gave a weak excuse by clapping slowly once, twice, three times. She then picked up her bag and trotted over to the first row, seating herself close and blinking up at Austen sweetly. “Let’s start on this juice.”

Theo set her cauldron up; measured the water and sparked up a flame, poking at it until she was satisfied with the heat. She scanned the instructions, noted down every little bit in fast tiny handwriting, then piled up ingredients on the desk, a neat pile of valerian springs next to the pouch of standard ingredient, next to a jar of juniper berries and so on. Muffle liked to stick Cochlearia Officinalis (Theo snorted, way to make common Scurvygrass appear complicated) into wooden boxes and she’d taught Theo a spell to leave them fresh for a month or so.

Her scale measured standard ingredient to a perfect point. One piece of Scurvygrass already waited inside the mortar when she added in some of the standard ingredient and started grinding. She continued adding, a piece of Scurvygrass, then standard, then Scurvygrass again until she got to five (and maybe a half okay), used up the standard and it mixed fine and proper. Her fingers worked fast with everything, and once she concentrated on her potion Theo saw nothing else.

If a fellow classmate had been trying to get her attention, Emma wouldn't have known, as she was too busy staring her fate in the face. The more Austen bolstered about his skills and talents, and vast knowledge of potions, the more Emma felt tinier and tinier, as she shrunk down in her chair. She didn't even notice, that as she was busy trying to make herself disappear, her hood hit the back of her chair, and Rook came tumbling out on the floor, and scurried away, out of sight.

Could she just flunk out now and be done with it? There was no way Emma would make a brew that would actually work. And now she was certain that this new professor would make her life miserable if she failed. Then again, he'd probably do that even if she didn't try. She took a deep breath, before sitting back up and looking at the board. Were her hands shaking? They must've been, what with the clatter her cauldron made as she brought it over to the back to use it to carry the potion ingredients back to her desk. Next she made a trip for the water, and when she came back she put the cauldron, now only containing the water, on a medium flame.

Claudia then Poured the mixture into the cauldron and let it sink to the bottom before stirring as rapidly as she could going counter clockwise 8 times. Before the solution had time to settle down she added the tea spoon of Sneeze Wart. She then began stirring clockwise 8 times. She was pleased in the progress she was making. She didn't want to mess this up and she was determined to make a decent grade on it. She then tapped her wand against the surface of the liquid(draught). She let it stand for ten minutes. While she waited until the ten minutes were up she looked around at everyone elses progress. She then looked over at Jett. He seemed to be doing a good job. He didn't look like he needed help. She sat there until the ten minutes were up and she gave it time to cool. She looked into the cauldron and was please to see a murky yellow color. She was glad that it didn't turn another color. She did not need a bad grade.

Austen set down his four potions that he was juggling, and took a very curt ostentatious bow at the lone clapper, not realizing that she was mocking him in any such way. Even if he realized it, he would not care at all, seeing as how they weren’t even in the same league in ability.

After the applauses died down and the students got started on their potions, once again he paced. No one had any questions, which gave him no indication that they need out. Some had silent mental melt downs but they needed a physiologist for that, not a potioneer. Boredom reared its ugly head once more. As the silence rose to a paramount high, he continued on talking. “Intelligence is the name of the game!” he said bounding back up to the front of the class. “In every class I will be rattling off questions while you work, see how you do under pressure because Owls and Newts are coming up soon and it is all about pressure. Well not for me of course, but for most of you…” Instead of finishing his statement, he clamped his hands together in unison of the creature banging on the stockroom door.

“Now. Irene, give me two other names for monkshood!” He paused for only a second and then continued. “Just say it when it comes to you." He acted like a gameshow host. This would be a perfect time for him to be wearing his pink florescent suit. "Jett give me the magical properties of Moly, and a famous example when it was used.” He was more amused with his own enthusiasm to stop there. “Theodora,” he pointed too with the hilt of his wand not even noticing it was backwards at all. “How do you test the Drought of the Living Dead for completion?”

Claudia was listening to the the questions he was asking. Atleast he hadn't been cold hearted with the going about of the questions. She still had a little bit of respect for him left. She had done enough studying to know the answers to most of the questions he asked so she assumed that they would too. She decided that she wasn't going to listen to the conversation going on and continue with her potion. She reached for three equal sized Levisticum Offcinale leaves and tossed them into her cauldron. She expected that when the leaves hit black smoke would appear and she would have to start over but to her surprise white smoke imerged from it. She was surprised how fast the leaves disintegrated. She let out a breath that she didn't even know she was holding. She felt relieved. While she waited for the smoke to clear she grabbed two sprigs of Valeriana Officinalis and Juniperus (blue) Berries. When it cleared she add them to her cauldron. She then waited five minutes and she saw the berries turn white. She watched as the potion began to turn a clear but green tint. At least it hadn't exploded or anything else bad. That must be a good sign.

Irene called out, "Wolfesbane and Aconitite are two of them!" She knew her answer was correct. However, the form of the second name could be risky.   Irene hoped he wouldn't take points from Gryffindor.  And Irene was careful not to break any rules so he wouldn't have an excuse to take away points. For some reason, he seemed like that type of person although he obviously wasn't.  She hoped the Ravenclaw boy and the Hufflepuff girl could answer their questions as well.  And it didn't matter too much, if he did end up taking away points later for no reason, well, Gryffindor would just have to earn the points back she supposed, although it wouls be a shame.  Hopefully, if she answered wrong, the Gryffindor girl she'd first wanted to make friends with seemed to think she was stupid for not knowing the answers.  She probably would, they were fairly easy questions that could be answered by reading in the textbooks or doing even a little extra research.  But Irene was positive that her answer was correct. Plus, she was hurrying her potion and might skip a few steps.  Really, she was being careless.  Irene wasn't so sure she wanted to be friends with her anymore.  Some people were just that way, she supposed.  She waited impatiently for the professor to check her potion so she could move on to the next few steps.

Jett was deep in concentration over his potion as Austen called out his name and asked him about moly. A second passed where he was confused...the drug? No, why did he think of that first? Of course it was the potion ingredient. Jett looked up from his cauldron and over to Austen. "The white leaves and black stem of a moly plant are used to protect against dark enchantments." He thought another second, recalling the fairy tales his father had told him long ago. Were they based on truth? Jett thought they may be and so his answer to the second part of Austens question was a bit unorthodox. "A prince one used moly in a wiggenweld potion to wake a sleeping princess."

He quickly went back to his potion. Austens skipping around the room was getting distracting. Jett had no doubt he was great, genius even, at potions. That alone, however, did not make him a good teacher. All he wanted to do now was finish his potion perfectly and get out of this classroom. He had much better things he could be studying.

Even though his mind was fuming over Austen's behavior Jett's focus remained on his potion. He watched as the bubbles formed in the water and turned off as he dropped his mixture into the cauldron. His eyes followed the powder as it reached the bottom and he began to stir counter clockwise, counting his rotations. After eight full turns he added the tea spoon of sneeze wart and again stirred clockwise eight times. Jett had yet to look back at the board, the words formed as a perfect picture in his mind that he could look back at without taking the extra time to avert his eyes from his potion. This was something he had trained himself to do over many years and rarely did it fail him.

Today was one of those times. He was so conflicted about this class that his feelings toward the professor that the words in his head suddenly rearranged themselves, changing a ten to a seven. So Jett waited patiently after tapping the potion with his wand for seven minutes before continuing on.

Irene checked the cauldron for bubbles and waited a few more minutes until it was at the right heat.  She snapped her fingers and the flames underneath immediately disappeared.  She stole a glance at the Ravenclaw boy who'd been called out.  He was focusing intensely on his potion, but Irene could tell he was annoyed at the professor as well.  She gently tipped the perfectly ground powdered substance into her cauldron, remembering to let it sink to the bottom before beginning to stir it counterclockwise.  Recalling the specific number of times, she stirred it eight times then carefully stopped to take a look at the board again.  She looked back to her concoction, which was faintly moving and quickly added a tablespoon of Sneeze Wart, instead of a teaspoon.  She stirred it again clockwise eight times.

She snapped her fingers and her wand flew out of her hand, tapping the surface of the draught automatically.  She checked the clock and gathered and organized ehr other ingredients, preparing them for the next few steps.  After ten minutes, she grabbed her wand and let the potion sit.  She looked at the professor, wondering if he would ever comment on her lack of skill at potions and hoped not.  He was already taking away points for breaking some rule, and she didn't even know which one.  He was biased and she didn't like him, no matter how high his IQ was or what his credentials were.  The smartest person in the world could've been a lousy teacher like him, and he definitely wasn't the smartest.  She waited impatiently, not wanting her potion to sit too long while waiting for him to take a look.

Blaze walked in, slamming the door open and not caring one bit. If he had to attend his classes in order to graduate, then fine. Doesn't mean he was going to be on time. Doesn't mean he was even going to do anything. Blaze was just going to sit there, staring at the teacher, and he wasn't going to give a shit about anything else.

He took a seat, crossing his arms and putting up his feet on the desk. He wasn't dealing with this. If only there was something else for him to do, or someone for him to talk to. Someone that he liked. He looked around the classroom and judged every single person that he saw in it, hating each and every one of them. Stupid, dumb, and incompetent, they all were. Completely useless.

(OOC: I have redone my last post to reflect my change of heart. I have treated Irene and Jett unfairly and I have decided that it is not far to not give a chance before taking away points. feel free (Jett, Claude, and Irene) to edit your previous post and send me a pm when you have in order for me to change the course of action in Austen's next post.

Don't get me wrong he will still be whimsical and arrogant, but I misjudge some of my actions.)
