| Late in the afternoon, only a couple days after the incident in Knockturn Alley, Carl was making her way down an old alleyway of a hotel. Today was not one of her "best dressed" days. She was simply wearing a white tank top and gray sweat pants, while her hair tangled mess of hair was tied back out of her face and tossed over her shoulder. And, to hide the lack of makeup she had on, she wore a pair of stylin' shady sunglasses. Oh, and of course, she had simply slipped on some old pair of boots, just in case she needed to take flight onto the rooftops.
The building she was seeking entrance was not the hotel, but a worn down auto shop behind it. It was closed today for one, and two, she wasn't one to take the front door entrance. Too obvious or something. But, when she tried the back door, it was locked. She thought it over a moment, then rapped on the door a couple times.
"Hey Butch!" She gave him a moment, "Butch, open the damn door! It's just me!"
After a couple more minutes of banging on the door, she finally got an answer. Not a warm welcoming, but an answer nonetheless. The door opened, and she was hurried inside as the man said, "Not so loud, woman!"
Carl rolled her eyes and looked around the room. It was the manager's office, looked like, but all the curtains were drawn, and there was just one dim lamp on a table, where a group of people sat. She glanced to the man beside her, "Somethin' up Butch?"
"Nothing we can't handle, don't worry. Did you get the job done?" He said as he grabbed a chair for himself and sat down away from the group.
"Well, about that..." Carl scratched the back of her head, "Parker wasn't there."

| "No problem, just hand the book over and I'll take care of it." He said with a smile.
"Well... I don't have it."
His buddies over at the table glanced over, sensing the change in the atmosphere.
"You don't have it?" Butch asked, his tone going dull, and his expression blank.
Carl was the first to burst, however, mostly out of nervousness- she'd never angered him before. "You promised this would be easy! But someone else was looking for Parker! And then I got attacked and-"
"Do you realize what you've done? The information in that book was dangerous! If you let if fall into the wrong hands-"
There were both just about ready to scream at each other when one of the guys at the table spoke up, "Did you say someone else was looking for Parker?"

| Butch and Carl both turned their attention to him, their fuses temporarily burnt out.
"Well, yeah, he followed me out of the shop and-"
"attacked you?" Butch interrupted.
"No no, a guy on the street did, and the other guy showed me the way out." Needless to say, Carl didn't feel perky enough to simply give Butch the name of the mysterious man. She wasn't feeling too generous.
Butch sighed, pacing further into the room, his back turned. His buddies at the table shifted in their chairs and exchanged glances. Carl was watching them closely though. If they tried anything, she was close to the door.

| "I can give you one more chance Carling." Butch said as he looked over his shoulder, hands in his pockets, "Make it up to me, and you can leave here unharmed." The others at the table stood up.
"You're really playing this game with me?" Carl replied bitterly as she took a step back.
"You know I'm always looking out for you sweetie. But this time the stakes are too high."
"So what, you lose some money? I can pay you back! You know that!"
"It's not money, Carl." He slowly turned, looking her over, "It's a life."

| There was a long, horrible silence, as Carl processed his meaning, "You mean.. someone could die?" His silence was answer enough, "Fuck that. I didn't sign up for this." She turned for the door, but as she reached for the knob, she heard the distinctive click of a gun. She turned back to see three pistols trained on her. She glanced back to Butch.
"I'm sorry kitt. I can't help you this time. Not unless you help me."

| "So what do you want?" Carling asked.
"Just pull a few more jobs for me, and we're even. I'm gonna have my hands full trying to clean up your mess, this is the least you could do for me."
Carling glanced around, eying the men with the guns, before finally giving a dismissive nod and saying, "Fine."
"See you tomorrow at ten then." Butch answered as he returned to his work, and Carl exited through the door, muttering foul things to herself.
