Practice Makes Perfect {Open!} Empty
PostSubject: Practice Makes Perfect {Open!}   Practice Makes Perfect {Open!} EmptyTue Aug 12, 2014 12:56 pm

The sun was shinning when Sebastian woke up in the morning, late for Sunday breakfast as usual. He had to do a double check and lift the curtains to make sure, but it was true. Actually shining! And warm, too. He could feel the slight heat when he pressed his hand against the window pane. The warming air meant Seb could finally fly his broom for more than five minutes without feeling like his face was going to freeze off! The discovery of a pleasant spring day made him mentally go over his plans for the day; he had one charms paper left to write, but other than that he was free to hit the quidditch pitch. Too eager to grab more than a piece of toast from the Great Hall and an internal promise to finish his homework as soon as he was done outside, Seb rushed out into the late morning sun.

When he reached the pitch there was no one else there; nothing but open air and empty seats greeted him. He finally took a moment to look up into the sky and noticed the lack of clouds and the perfect blue that stretched on for what seemed forever. Everything added up to the perfect day to continue to train himself on his new broom, one that had not seen much use during the winter after he received it as a replacement for his older model. With a content smile, he stepped one leg over the hovering broom and took off, the still new scent of recently varnished wood rising up to fill his nose as the air rushed past.

Honestly Seb felt a little guilty clutching the handle of the broom. His mother had given it to him as a Christmas present a few months ago, and he assumed the price tag had been hefty. He was grateful, but felt that the money may have been better spent on his younger brothers, each of whom did not have a broom at all, let alone a replacement one. When he had told his mother this she had become sad. Seb couldn't figure out why so he left the topic alone after that.

The wind, still holding a small chill, bit through his sweater and he was glad he had had the foresight to slip it over his shirt before climbing onto his broom. As he had walked to the pitch all the students he saw were wearing as little as the weather allowed, eager to soak up the first warm sun of the year. He had known, though, that up in the air would be a different story, and had come prepared. It was usual for Seb to be prepared for any sort of eventuality, and often he was the first one to lend out a quill, snack, or gloves to those who needed it.

As he flew high above the field he wondered if any of his fellow teammates would show up and practice with him. He had mentioned to them where he was going when he left the Hufflepuff common room a while ago, thinking that if he was getting extra practice it was only logical that they may want to do the same. He wasn't sure if that was right though; he was on the field much more than any of the others.

PostSubject: Re: Practice Makes Perfect {Open!}   Practice Makes Perfect {Open!} EmptyTue Aug 12, 2014 10:30 pm

"Come on Em," Kaden yelled behind him, already half way across the grounds waiting on Emma to catch up. "Why are you so slow?" He said jokingly, once Emma caught up to him. "You would be late to your own death day partyIt seemed to be a perfect day for flying. The sun shining glorious over head seem to shower the fields of grass with life and beauty. Most students had the right idea, lounging about on the first beautiful day of spring, Students spreading out on the grounds, having picnics, swimming in the Great Lake with the giant squid or playing frisbee. Kaden slowed down his pace long enough to look longingly at a happy couple who took shelter from the warm spring sun under a birch tree. The girl rested in the boy's strong arms, while the boy conjured colored butterflies of the girl's choosing. The butterflies started out normal colors of yellows and black to vibrant radiant colors reds, blues even oranges. It made him happy for them, but a little bit envious for not having what they have.

"Focus," he told himself, fixing the strap of his broom, which loosen just a bit, making it a little bit uncomfortable as they descended the grassy knoll. Captain Emma made an executive decision that we, the Gryffindor team, needed more practice. It seemed to be going well, but after in fighting, a bludger incident and a hex broom due to the rival Slytherin team it was down to the two of them once again. Even that did not stop them from doing a little bit of practicing. And finally the weather now agreed with Kaden and his illness. He never told Em, even though they were much closer now than prior years because of their bonding sessions, Captain Emma put them through and having overlapping common interest, he did not want to worry her. He rarely told anyone he was sick, especially the people closest to him. It was a burden, a burden he would proudly carry on his shoulders. Now that the weather changed he would have no problem with quidditch practice today.

"What's first on the list?" He asked, watching as Emma with her short legs try to keep up with his long strides. "Maneuvers? My goal keeping skills? Chase of the bludger?" He said once more fixing the loosen strap around his chest. "Just remember that I have one of the old broom models and can't perform fantastic feets like the Supernova 360." Kaden had the Knotthole Glade 1, which was revolutionary of its time, but was now an antique. He could feel it even as it was strapped to its back that it was shaky and off kilter. It liked to shift to the left a lot. Money was tight and his parents couldn't afford a new broom for him so they settle on a recycled one found at a garage sale. It was still a good broom. One of his most cherished items in his possession. He saved many a saves on it, which was all he could ever asked for.

When they got to the quidditch pitch, he realized that it was already occupied. A person, Kaden could not tell who from this distance, was already running drills in the air. He was good. A natural born flyer, for what Kaden could see. "I guess we can wait our turn," he told Em, seeing as how he did not want to interrupt the flying lesson of another quidditch player, even though from another team.

PostSubject: Re: Practice Makes Perfect {Open!}   Practice Makes Perfect {Open!} EmptyWed Aug 13, 2014 2:34 am

“Hey, these short legs make me more aerodynamic. I'd feel jealous if I were you!” Her shouting could be heard by any student who happened to be walking the grounds, but if Kaden hadn't rushed on ahead, she wouldn't have to talk so loud. Emma was running after him, with her broom tossed over her shoulder, and when he finally seemed to slow down for her, she took the opportunity to get back at him. She dropped her broom, and barreled straight into him, landing them both in the dirt with a light thud (Being small, Emma didn't have much impact). As she picked herself up off the ground, she laughed, and offered Kaden a hand up as well, “That's for insulting your team Captain.” She said in a very unconvincing authoritative tone. Emma grinned as she grabbed her broom and lead the rest of the way there, intent on not being the slowpoke again.

She and Kaden had known each other long enough that he knew to never take her seriously, especially as Captain of their Quidditch team. Emma tried to make sure everyone on the team knew that, so they wouldn't mistake her for a snob. Quidditch for Emma was like an escape from all the crap that goes on at school; on the field, there was no girl drama, no stuck up pureblood talk, and no stress about all those missing Potions assignments she'd been putting off. Out here it was just her teammates, and the Quaffle- annnd Snitch and Bludgers. As far as most Captains go, Emma liked to think of herself as laid back, and aside from her occasional need to remind the guys that she wasn't some prissy girl who worried about her hair all day, she felt quite comfortable hanging out with her teammates, even outside of practice. It was like they were their own club or something. Maybe they needed their own secret Quidditch handshake!

Unfortunately the team consisted of only her and Kaden today, thanks to a couple rough games and those no good rotten Slytherins... But Emma never turned down a chance at more practice, and she could hardly wait to get back in the air again, especially now that it was spring. She had gotten tired of iced up goggles and the rudolph nose she would get after being out in the icy winds. And though the weather was nothing but clear skies, she still had her goggles hanging around her neck. She'd grown quite fond of them, and although they made a strange fashion statement, she enjoyed lugging them around.

As they entered the pitch, and Kaden started asking where they'd be starting out, Emma simply shrugged, “I wouldn't mind brushing up on my Chaser skills, so we can get you started with Keeper.” He read her mind of course, as he mentioned there would be no crazy stunts on the broom he had, “Maybe if you're nice to me, I'll let you take my broom for a spin!” She felt a little guilty, carrying the Supernova with her; then again, her broom carried the weight of a summer's worth of chores with her, and it had taken a lot of begging to her mom on top of that.

Emma looked up as Kaden pointed out a flyer on the pitch, and shielded her eyes from the sun, but she couldn't figure out who it was either, “Hopefully it's not Slytherin. I'd hate for one of them to ruin my day.” She tried not to judge a student ny the colors of their robes, but Emma had run into a few of the Slytherins on the Quidditch team, and they were unpleasant, even outside of Quidditch. And she was aware that not all Slytherins were like that, ever since she met Matt. Emma pulled her goggles up to rest on her head, and then she tightened her ponytail as the two of them headed over to the visitor side's tent (?), but rather then heading inside, Emma plopped down on the ground, with her broom in her lap. From here, they would be out of the way, but would still have a good view of the flyer above. Now sitting, Emma watched intently, wondering who it was.

Practice Makes Perfect {Open!} Empty
PostSubject: Re: Practice Makes Perfect {Open!}   Practice Makes Perfect {Open!} EmptyWed Aug 13, 2014 1:48 pm

Seb had excellent eyesight – you had to if you were a seeker. But even with it at this height he could only make out the forms of two people walking across the field, with no details to tell him who they were. At first he assumed they were two of his teammates come to join him and he was glad; practicing alone was all well and good, but it would be more effective to work on maneuvers and signals with the team present. He made a quick turn midair and headed towards the side of the field where they were seated in the grass. He could have dived down the remaining distance in order to make it faster, but Seb was not fond of what he thought would be showing off. His teammates knew what he could do, he didn't need to be over the top about it. Instead he descended at an extraordinarily even pace, which in itself took much skill and control.

When he got close enough he realized his mistake. The two students watching him from the field were not his teammates, but were garbed in the red and gold of Gryffindor. He could make out the small frame of the seeker and the darkly handsome features of the keeper. Emma and Kaden. Seb supposed he liked the two of them well enough; they saw each other quite frequently in classes, as they were all in the same year. They were both friendly, and Seb could remember the times Emma had managed to make him laugh with some antic or other. She was a great seeker, too, which he had to admire. Her dedication to quidditch made the Gryffindor team a tough opponent. Kaden he didn't know as well, other than what he heard around the halls.

During the last stretch of distance to the ground Seb decided that he was going to let the  other students have the field to themselves if they wanted. It made sense – there were two of them and they could practice more maneuvers and strategies than he could by himself. Their use of the field would be more beneficial than his, so of course they should have it. Besides, he doubted they wanted him around while they were working; he might catch a glimpse of something they planned to use in the the next match up against Hufflepuff, and that insider knowledge wouldn't be fair of him to have. He would just head back to the castle and start his charms assignment.

Seb reached the ground and lightly stepped off his broom after his feet were planted firmly on the grass. He took the broom in one hand and offered the two Gryffindors a smile of greeting. “Hi Emma, hi Kaden.”

“Everyone had the same idea today, because of the sun, didn't they?” He should have thought of that earlier, but the idea never crossed his mind. Seb could never predict what other people would do, but in hindsight it should have been obvious the moment he saw the sun shinning outside his dormitory window. He was just happy that the other students with the idea hadn't ended up being the Slytherin team. Their beater seemed to have a personal vendetta against him for some unfathomable reason.

Seb rolled up the sleeves of his stripped Hufflepuff issued sweater and glanced up to the sky. He then looked back to the others, taking in what they were wearing. “It's a bit chilly up in the air, still. You should keep something warm on or you might get cold.” It was force of habit for Seb to look out for the comfort of others, though it was not done out of any sort of emotional attachment but a sense of responsibility that may or may not be warranted. He knew the conditions, and he felt he should impart that knowledge.

“Have a good practice; see ya later.” While his smile was friendly, his voice lacked much feeling. He was a little disappointed to be leaving so soon, but what could he do?

Practice Makes Perfect {Open!} Empty
PostSubject: Re: Practice Makes Perfect {Open!}   Practice Makes Perfect {Open!} EmptyThu Aug 14, 2014 5:19 pm

"That's okay," he said following Emma to the edge of the Quidditch stands, but not taking a seat beside her, as the watch the flier maneuver with grace and speed. Kaden wasn't the envious type. He didn't look at the sleek black wood and the red, orange and yellow bristles of Emma's broom and get jealous, wishing he had it instead and not her. It wasn't his style. He was genuinely happy for her and liked to see, even on Em's bad days, how this broom puts a smile on her face.

As the broom with the flier on it slowly descended, he realized who was on it before the person's feet hit the floor. It was Sebastian Montrone, from Hufflepuff. Fifth year just like Emma and himself but other than that he knew little about him, except for saying hello to him in the halls every once in awhile and that he seemed friendly. Sebastian landed was as perfect as anything else, he did. He didn't need a whole landing strip to touch down like a Captain, he knows. Well, to give Emma the benefit of the doubt, she usually descends at full speed. Flying made her happy, and when she is happy, she gets bubbly and excited, making her do silly things, like jump off her broom before fully stopping.

He was greatful that it was Sebastian and not one of the members of the Slytherin Quidditch gang, because he did not know how much more Emma could take with the taunting. And after the in indent last week with hi-jinxs broom and all, Kaden wasn't to far off from exploding too. If they tried to send himself and especially another team member to the Hospital wing again, he would be liable to retaliate in kind.

"I guess so," Kaden said, shielding his eyes from the sun to look at the clear blue sky overhead. How could they not be drawn in to the sport they love so much, especially on one of the most beautiful days they have seen in a long time. It would be almost criminal not too. Even though it was warm, Kaden had his Gryffindor scarlet and gold jacket on with the Gryffindor mascot, the lion over his right breast. He knew that it could get quite frigide up in the air, even in days like these and Kaden did not particularly care for the cold.

He looked over to Emma and wasn't at all surprise that she forgot hers. She too wore street clothes, because house robes weren't needed on the weekend. She wore her knee and elbow pads, and her googles were around her neck for flying. She had everything but the jacket. Kaden did not really think about what he was doing as he unclasped the buttons and unzipped his Gryffindor jacket and held it out to Emma. "Here," he said, not taking no for an answer.

"No, wait," he said, stopping Sebastian before he left. "You were here first. We can wait or come back a bit later." Handing over his jacket, letting Sebastian have the quidditch field, they were not some grand chivalrous gesture to make Kaden look good. They spoke to his inner nature. Even in the smallest of acts, he always tried to put other people first, make them smile and uplift there day.

Practice Makes Perfect {Open!} Empty
PostSubject: Re: Practice Makes Perfect {Open!}   Practice Makes Perfect {Open!} EmptyThu Aug 14, 2014 10:41 pm

As the Hufflepuff's seeker touched down and offered both her and Kaden a friendly greeting, Emma grinned and did the same, “Hey Sebastian!” She was always happy to see a familiar face, and she could remember seeing him in class and during Quidditch games, he'd even been up against her once or twice. He was some tough competition. As Sebastian started warning them about the weather, she stood up with her broom in one hand, only to suddenly have Kaden's jacket in her face. “Psh. I'm not afraid of a little cold!”

Sebastian seemed to wanna get out of their way and let Gryffindor have the field, while Kaden was perfectly content waiting until Sebastian was finished with his drills, but Emma had a better idea, “Why don't we all train together?” She pushed away the jacket Kaden had offered and then she stepped forward, “Kaden already knows all my moves anyways, so it'd be better than just running our drills. We can have Kaden on the goals, then you can be chaser, and I'll try to intercept. That way you still get to practice some of your own flying manuevers!”

The way Emma saw it, this was better than just two people training together, plus seeing that Emma hadn't actually booked the field today, Gryffindor had no claim to it, so they couldn't just kick him out. “What do you say? It's not like we're arch rivals or anything, right?” She smiled as she waited for his answer.

Practice Makes Perfect {Open!} Empty
PostSubject: Re: Practice Makes Perfect {Open!}   Practice Makes Perfect {Open!} EmptyFri Aug 15, 2014 1:40 pm

Why was Kaden telling him to stay, and that they would go? They just got here, and were obviously ready to fly. It made no sense to Seb, and he wouldn't let them just walk away when, tactically speaking, they would make more use of the field than he would. “No, I couldn't-” But what Seb couldn't do was cut off by Emma's voice chiming in, offering her own solution to the problem.

“Uhhh...” Seb was processing Emma's proposal: he looked up to the sky, which was incredibly inviting, back to the two other students, then down to his feet on the grass. It was all a very awkward moment as the gears ticked on in his brain and he struggled to make a decision. What could be the harm in practicing with them, though? If they were suggesting it...well, it was a beautiful day and he wasn't particularly looking forward to that charm's paper waiting for him...

“Yeah, sure. That's a good idea. If it's alright with Kaden, too? You don't mind me seeing your moves? I don't want our next match to be unfair.” Sebastian's expression scrunched with concern, trying to determine why Emma would be ok with him practicing with them. Perhaps she was just trying to be friendly, and that was a good enough reason, he supposed. She didn't seem like the calculating type to have any other motives, so Seb stopped trying to rationalize the situation and grinned. He was happy to be able to stay longer.

“And if we were arch rivals that would make me a Slytherin. I've seen you guys's matches; pretty intense! I'd rather be on your good side.” He joked, but it was true. The two other teams played hard, and a lot of injuries had happened lately. Seb was not envious of their rivalry, and surmised the reason that the whole Gryffindor team wasn't here today was because they were resting due to the orders of the hospital wing.

“I'll go get a quaffle. Be right back.” Before anyone could stop him this time, Seb turned and jogged into the little tent like structure that housed the equipment and changing areas for quidditch matches. He pulled out a box containing extra quaffles and lifted one in his hand, testing the weight and balance. Deciding it was just fine, he returned to the two Gryffindor's with a smile. “Ready?”

Practice Makes Perfect {Open!} Empty
PostSubject: Re: Practice Makes Perfect {Open!}   Practice Makes Perfect {Open!} EmptySun Aug 17, 2014 11:52 pm

Looking wistfully through a high window of the Slytherin common room, Matthew wished he could see clouds. Instead he saw the depths of Hogwarts lake; the only view the large dungeon windows allowed underground. He imagined himself outside in the castle fields, perhaps catching insects in the way he often did. Spring was in full bloom and he hated the fact he was stuck inside with Transfiguration homework that he had no hope solving by himself.

He looked everywhere except at what he was supposed to be doing. There were a couple of paintings on the common room walls. Some portraits of famous Slytherins, such as Merlin, smiling at him sheepishly from his frame; others of distant places Matt could only hope to visit someday. In a moment's notice he imagined himself back home, where he kept photographs of such similar places in a drawer in his small room. He'd often lay upon the soft carpet on his bedroom floor, with the photographs scattered around him. He'd pick a photograph at random, close his eyes and imagine himself in that place.

The thought of it sent Matt home further still, on a higher plane of consciousness and he opened his eyes to an empty room. He was in auntie's bed, his uncle's old muggle radio on the nighstand playing some sort of instrumental music. Matt thought he recognized Bach. He knew this; it was a memory of this past Christmas when he had gone home for the holidays and got sick with a high temperature. Auntie had made him sleep in her own bed, to keep a better eye on him; and his uncle was forced to sleep on the couch. The room was bathed in a gentle melancholic light, seeming smoky as it passed through the thin white curtains. The door of the room was open a crack; the scent of butter and cinnamon dancing in whiffs, slowly pulling Matt from underneath the warm covers. Auntie must be baking Christmas cookies.

Matt pushed the blanket away and crawled out of bed, making his way towards the kitchen. No amount of sickness and certainly no high temperature could keep him away from auntie’s cookies. He headed down the hall to the kitchen and found his uncle at the kitchen table, reading morning newspaper, a cup of coffee; and his auntie by the stove. Auntie pushed a stray strand of hair that had fallen from her bun behind her ear and her glasses further up her nose and when she turned around she smiled at Matt.

In present Matt shook his head, sadly looking back to his homework. He had no idea how to solve the problems and his attempts at actually transforming something were horrid at best. He realized hours ago that he would have to ask someone for help, but the idea of approaching someone with the request did not appeal to him at all. He had no doubt that a peer or an upperclassman would help him if only he asked – Slytherins were sometimes strangely protective and helpful to their own – and yet he was reluctant to bother someone. At last he gave up and gathered his books to chance going outside instead. He’d look for Emma in the Quidditch pitch, maybe; after a short consideration, he fetched his broom from the dorm. Matt didn’t think himself that great a flier, at least not when comparing to most other players, but apparently he had been decent enough to make the team. When he first appeared at try-outs he felt as awkward and confused as the looks he was getting from others trying out; it was clear no one expected him to show up. But years of catching insects certainly helped develop his reflexes. He could see the tiny flying creatures and follow them for hours or trap them in seconds, all depending on what the game was at the time. Just like that, he had made seeker. He had thought of Emma then and felt himself swell with pride.

He all but ran outside, skipping up the stairs like a cat and rushing through the great doors of the castle. The rush of spring filled his lungs and roared in his chest and made his head spin. He was definitely late; there were three figures there already by the time he got to the pitch. His face lit up when he spotted Emma among them, but he caught himself before throwing an arm up in a greeting wave. Matt played Quidditch by rules Emma had taught him, but the same could not be said for the rest of his team. It was no secret that Slytherin was not the favourite, if not the least favourite team on the field; and little more could be said for the entire house. Bad reputation was never far from Slytherin. The other two might not be so kind to his presence.

He relaxed more the closer he got to the field; Matt had briefly met Kaden as well and if the boy had been friendly on those occasions, Matt dared not doubt him now. The third player he recognized somewhat from the previous matches, but Matt did not know his name. At last he called out to the trio, a short "Hello!" accompanied by a small wave with the hand that held his broom. "Got room for one more?"
