| Detention with Headmistress Naer. Lovely. Dein arrived on time, but to his own aggravation, it appeared that Eirina had not. The gate to the chamber was locked firmly in place, leaving Dein to brewd in the dim hallway. Detention at seven- of that, she'd been clear. It just showed how wonderful of a Headmistress she really was. Seeing it in this light, perhaps Dein should not have been surprised at all. The horrible job she was doing had been drilled into his brain since before he was even attending this wretched school. The badge on his robes mocked him with its presence.
For this particular meeting with the Headmistress, Dein brought nothing with him; no bag, no journal, not even his wand. Naer hadn't mentioned he'd need anything, and for this, a wand was not necessary anyway. He had plenty other effective tools at his fingertips; much more useful than a silly little stick.
He took a deep breath, staring through the gate for a moment as he folded his hands behind his back. Eirina would be approaching from behind once she finally did arrive, but he felt no reason to turn and wait. Instead, he closed his eyes, and cleared his mind. There was a bit of a draft in the hallway, but he let the sound of the light breeze carry him further into his mind. Eventually, when he opened his eyes again, he looked to the open window a few paces down the hall, where the air was drifting in. He walked over and looked out to the darkening sky.

| She was going to be late, and the thought pursued throughout her mind as she made her way, rushing down the stairs. Her footsteps were heavy and she made her way to the last step, her heels falling hard onto the cold stone floor. This was one part of Hogwarts that didn't need to be renovated, it had been spared during the Second Wizarding War.
Maybe she should consider redoing it....it gave even her the chills.
Eirina carried a few books and scrolls in her arms and she could hear the keys clinging against eachother on her wrist, letting out an echoing ring. Surely Dein would know she was coming before she even got there.
And her lateness bothered her thoughts again. She had no intention of being late, in fact she was preparing to be early for once by gathering all of the things she needed to complete and brought them down with her. However she started to get distracted, seeing how much work she actually had to do, and when she sat down at her desk to run through it all, she ended up falling asleep. Thankfully no students came for a visit.
So here she was, rushing, now meeting the back of Dein's head.
"Move over," she said as she tried to shoo Dein aside, shifting the books scrolls to one hand and holding them on her hip as she took her time to unlock the gate, kicking the door open.
"Go on, get inside." | |

| And there she was, Dein thought as he heard the jingle of keys and the clicks of her shoes marking her approach. By the time she'd made her way into sight, he'd already moved out of her way. He watched her as she performed her balancing act in order to unlock the door, and when she directed him inside, he merely obeyed, keeping his thoughts to himself.
Had she been punishing any other student- at least Slytherin- she most likely would have come up to an empty hallway, being as late as she was. Dein, however, had some courtesy, and also already had a bit of experience with the Headmistress's lack of professionalism.
As he walked into the center of the room, he felt rather comfortable with the atmosphere. It was almost like the dungeons, only without actually being underground. Quite appropriate for a Detention Hall. Dein turned, and waited for instruction from the Headmistress.

| The room was pretty empty, aside from a desk that sat up at the front and a few, two person tables filling the room. Almost all of the tables were dusty, besides one in the far back corner, as far away from Eirina's desk as possible. She didn't mind, she knew the kids didn't want to be there, and she knew that they definitely didn't want to be any closer to her and in her presence then they already had to be. So she'd let them sit in the back, it's not like they could do much of anything anyway.
She could remember her first detention down here. She was out late, flying around and, totally on accident, ran into a student. But they were also out past curfew, and it was dark, so it wasn't her fault that she couldn't see them! Or at least that's what she had thought at the time, now she knows that they were both at fault, but she still didn't entirely blame herself.
She sat right up in the front. Eirina thought it was rebellious at that time, and she's stare the teacher down. She thought she was intimidating, but now she realizes that they probably just laughed at her. Kind of sad to think about it.
"Sit wherever you like."
She slammed, not intentionally, all of the books and scrolls that she had onto the desk in the front, now turning to face Dein, who was empty handed. She raised a brow.
"Did you bring any homework?"

| "I brought nothing, Headmistress." He replied with a curt nod, perhaps as though he were offering an apology, but he soon shifted his gaze elsewhere, looking for a proper seat. They were all covered in dust, something Dein would not be pleased to have settle all over his robes. The back desk seemed to be the most used, however, so he walked back and approached it. He did not sit, but instead, picked up the chair with one hand, taking it up off the floor, and moved it across the room, to the desk closest to the front. He replaced the dusty chair with the one he carried, before finally taking his seat. He rested his hands in his lap, as he looked up at her once again.
He was not trying to stare her down, but rather, he was observing her, waiting for whatever punishment she would give, since he would not be occupying himself with his studies.

| "Do you not have any or did you decide not to bring any?"
She looked at him for a moment, but before waiting for his reply, her eyes had shifted to her stack of work. She hated it, and she hated doing it, but what else was there? She could just sit here, too, but that was boring. Plus, the work would have to be done eventually. Now is just as good as ever, wasn't it? Eirina tried to convince herself of that as she removed the first scroll and grabbed a quill.
It was the book, she realized. Her book, for charms class. This school year mostly had fourth years in it, and although she had completed the introduction and half of the first year's courses, she was tempted to skip to the fourth year. They'd need it first, and they had the most kids in it. It only made sense, right?
Eirina was absorbed in her own thoughts, that she wasn't even sure if Dein had replied to her. She looked back up, staring at the boy. Her thoughts made it feel like she spent a couple of minutes thinking, but it was only a few seconds. Dein probably didn't even have the time to reply, even though Eirina didn't realize that. So, since she wasn't sure, she studied his face, trying to figure out what his answer was based on his expression.
Of course, that didn't help her out at all.

| She seemed to have gotten lost in her thoughts as soon as she'd asked the question, so he waited to reply when she was actually paying attention. When she looked back, however, he could tell she was obviously trying to analyze him. That was his game. But he smiled, nonetheless, and gave her an answer moments afterwards.
"I decided not to." It was honesty, however, he knew full well it would come off as a remark dripping with attitude. He had no reason to lie.

| Eirina could remember her own mistake, that one time that she had a detention. She brought nothing, and the professor had locked the gate, saying that the only way out was in the next hour. She ended up carving the one table insanely, she scribbled her initials into it, Vincent's into it, some drawings of broomsticks and some comments on the stupidity of Detention. Eirina had actually never though about it, and now that she did, once Dein left she'd have to find the desk and remove it. It would be a bit careless of her to leave it, even though she was sure no one noticed her now, she would have heard the rumors already.
"Well I suggest we get it, otherwise you're going to be staring at a wall for an hour and a half."
She pulled out her wand, ready to call upon Dein's homework and bring it down alongside a quill for him in order to write with it. She'd need to know the homework though, and who from, so she waited for Dein to answer her.
"And who assigned the homework?"

| "Professor Reid." He said with a smirk. The history assignment would be a whole lot more exciting than anything else he could think of. He had no problem staring at a wall for an hour and a half, but Naer seemed rather determined to keep him busy. | |

| As Eirina pulled her wand out from its place, under her skirts and wrapped around her leg (though Dein couldn't see this from her position behind her desk), she called upon a spell, similar to accio, however a bit more powerful. And, within moments, appeared a strange stone that Eirina stared at before giving it to Dein. It couldn't possibly be a trick, but it was an odd homework assignment. What was he going to do with the stone?
Eirina didn't know much about history, hence her lack in knowledge about the stone. Especially history that pertained to anywhere in the world that hadn't been the UK, there was no chance of her knowing or understanding what it was that she was presented with.
The chair squeaked as she sat back down, pulling out her books and looking down at them. To work it is. A silent sigh escaped her lips.

| Had Dein actually planned on doing homework, he would have told her he'd work on Professor Brown's homework. Now, however, he simply had something to toy with as he watched Eirina do her own work. As his fingers ran across the amulet, he smirked, raising his head a little to provoke attention.
"May I ask what exactly my detention is for, Headmistress? Can't learn my lesson otherwise."

| Eirina looked up to stare at Dein, shock written all over her face.
"And you need to be asked?"
She watched him for a moment, observing him, but more so she was staring at him with shock and disgust. Was he serious, and not only that, but HOW could he be serious? Skipping class, for one, continuously skipping class, for another. Throwing spells around, carelessly, and not while under the supervision of a professor. She could even go on and on with the information she had previously received from some of the professors. It was chaotic!
Eirina almost answered Dein, but she didn't. She had wanted for him to think on it, and possibly he'd answer her. If he was going to be smart about it, in a snarky way, she was sure he would simply ask his question again, and that she wouldn't stand for.

| He stared at her the longest time, forming his own answer based on her expression. Obviously he had used magic that could have been harmful- he knew that. But though it seemed like it deserved severe punishment, in this particular case, Dein didn't believe that was it. She did not realize that when she found him, he actually was heading to class, but she likely assumed the opposite, considering the patterns of absence from classes. So that's what it was.
He was here because she didn't know what to do with him.
He smirked, accepting the situation in its entirety and gazed out the window for a moment to gather his thoughts. The Egyptian eye amulet in his hand reflected the light in the room as he let it slide between his fingers. He glanced down at it with a dull expression before speaking again.
"I was actually heading to class when you caught me." He looked back out the window, "Just for the record."

| "Then why'd you leave your backpack behind?"
Eirina looked at Dein suspiciously. What kid went to class without their book bag? With their fists in a knot? She honestly didn't think Dein knew much about where he was going, but of course that wasn't for her to say allowed, seeing that it was a judgement and less then fact. Instead she stared at him, almost over with the situation. He was in detention now, for throwing spells unsupervised, and that was that.
Eirina gave up on her own question to Dein and looked back down at her papers.

| "That's what gave you the wrong impression." He shrugged, "Obviously I forgot it." He set the amulet down on the desk and rested his head on his hand. "But I don't blame you, I would have thought the same."
He nudged the amulet along the table, obviously bored of it, and nearly bored of the conversation as well. He had to stir up the conversation if he wanted the time to pass. He glanced up at the Headmistress once again, any form of emotion vacant from his expression. He asked, "What did you think about the tournament, by the way? I didn't get the chance to ask you. The tasks were quite clever, don't you agree? Especially that last one." His gaze became expectant, waiting for her to grasp his meaning. What did Headmistress Naer think of the mutated freaks that nearly killed all three Champions?

| "Clever. Yes. Now get back to your work."
Eirina was clearly off put through Dein's bringing up of the tournament. She had sent letter after letter to the Ministry, demanding an explanation and offering formal complaints. And yet she hadn't received a single letter back. Not one. Not even a letter of acknowledgment that said that they had received her complaint and would look into the situation, a standard letter that was sent out to everyone who filed a complaint, regardless of what the complaint was about.
Her owl had come back every time, too, so there was no possibility of interception. They were ignoring her, and not answering her questions. They didn't want to answer her questions, or answer to their own actions.
They were sweeping everything under the carpet. A carpet that was so full of dust bunnies, it levitated off the floor beneath it. Nothing could hide for long.

| (*poof* book.)
Dein was quite aware why she wouldn't answer him. Headmistress weren't supposed to openly share their opinions over such icky matters. He smirked as he opened his book open and started sifting through the pages, looking for a picture that represented the amulet in his hand.
"I was thinking of getting a job with the Ministry you know. I'm curious to see what I'll learn from rising through their ranks. Maybe they'll even show me what else they're doing with those powerful creatures. Or maybe I'll just become one of their test subjects instead." He turned the page nonchalantly, "Could be fun."

| Eirina completely ignored Dein now, her blood was quickly running hot. She, silently, summoned herself some tea to drink and, as she turned the page that she was righting on, the tea kettle poured herself some into her cut. The detention would soon be over, so Dein didn't have much longer in here. She wouldn't have to listen to him badger, even though she really didn't have to listen to him now. It would have been easy to put a stop to it, but Hogwarts was past the times of the physical punishment toward students. Even spells, she would never dare to lay a harmful hand on any of her students. No matter how annoying they were, or how harmless the spell.
Silently, she continued on, writing in her book of different lessons for charms. She was slowly going through the years, and perhaps she'd be more capable to hold a productive class.

| Why was it so impossible to get a rise out of her? She had to be near her breaking point, he just wanted to see her do something! How could she just sit there? His own temper was at a boil, and he didn't even understand why! He took a deep, loosely controlled breath, and closed his book as he looked at the clock. Detention was over in just a few moments, he only had one chance. As he stood up, he spoke, as he moved to the door, his back turned on Eirina, "Could upset your sister Lydin though."
Without even saying it, just speaking her name felt like a ton of bricks rolling off his shoulders onto the floor. He stopped in his place, frozen stiff as he stared at the door.

| Eirina's hand froze exactly where it was. She paused for a moment, staring at her paper, but not seeing anything that she had written down. Lydin. He'd mentioned Lydin, her sister, Lydin. As her sister. How could he have known that.
"Excuse me? What was that?"
She had locked the gates with her wand. Dein wasn't going anywhere.

| Dein paused, knowing he couldn't go back from his words, so he turned, slowly, back to her, staring at the ground in thought as he slowly stepped back across the room. He looked at her, as he approached the desk, and stood in the subdued silence. Why he even had a reason to keep it from her, he had no clue. What harm could it do? He was already disowned, scarred, and practically done with everything about this place. She wasn't a threat, and despite everything his mother and father told him, he still kept speaking to her. That had been all he wanted from all those pointless conversations. He didn't have his mother to talk to, and certainly not any friends. What was the harm in her knowing?
He took in a deep breath, looked her straight in the eye, and answered, "Lydin Edrins, ma'am." He looked down, then quietly walked back over to his seat and sat down, before looking at her once again. No matter what she said, or how long it took for it to click, he was relieved. He laced his fingers together, rested his head on his hands, closed his eyes, and waited.

| "Lydin...Edrins?"
The name ran through her mind a million times over. And she knew what it meant. By god, did she know what it had meant, but she still had nothing to say. There was nothing for her to grab onto, no stable rock that she could cling to. No, she'd fall into the jagged rocks below. She'd fall, and fall, and fall.
"And you knew? And she knew?"
She paused for a moment, taking a deep breath. Of course. His eyes, they had been familiar to her. And now she knew why. He had her eyes, in shape and color. Her lips, too. And he was just as thin and tall as she was, and the personality.
How could she have been so dumb?
"And no one said anything? Nothing."

| "Well of course she knew. She gave birth to me." Dein opened his eyes to look at Naer's bewildered face, "I didn't know until the tournament. You remember me telling you about my family situation? My father didn't take kindly to my interrogation." He glanced around the room, now much more interested in the decor than the person he was speaking to. "For whatever reason, they preferred me to think everyone on my mother's side was dead. Beyond that, I don't know."
Perhaps now she was going to kick him out, so she could collect her thoughts. Her maybe kick him out and not even want to speak with him again. He assumed her response would be something along the lines. Maybe he wouldn't have to worry about her keeping an eye on him, making sure he got to class on time. That'd be one less thing to worry about, certainly.

| "Far from dead..."
Eirina began to think of her biological mother and stepfather, Lydin's biological mother and father. They were alive and well, and even though Eirina didn't talk to them much, having never been a close family to begin with, she wouldn't ever have the audacity to say that they were all dead, and she couldn't imagine any with the nerve to say it. But, apparently Lydin had grown to be that kind of person.
And then it hit her. Not that she hadn't known before, but now she could think of the direct word. Dein was her nephew. He was more then just her sister's son. He was something of Eirina's, too. Something that she could connect to, directly. Her nephew. And she was his aunt.
She calmed herself down a bit, taking a deep breath. She drifted back to the first thing Dein had said, about his family situation. Her sister could disown her own son? What kind of a family was that? What kind of family of hers was that? How could they possibly share the same blood? And yet, she did, and that blood ran through Dein, too.

| Dein focused his gaze in on Eirina as she trailed off, and he rested his thumb against his cheek as he thought. Now the only question he needed answering, was simple: why did they need to hide Naer from him? And him from Naer? His mind went back to the information he'd read from her file. Eirina's, as well as Lydin's, mother was Rolin Naer. So she was Dein's grandmother. His grandfather apparently vanished out of thin air, and in his stead, a step grandfather, Seirn Naer. With this knowledge, the only possible explanation would have to be Naer and his mother grew up with an unfavorable home life. They probably didn't get along with each other, either. If he was wrong, then the next best guess would have to be his father. Lydin might have met his father, father didn't like mother's family, and then end of story. Was Naer a mudblood? No, that was too simple.
He leaned back in his chair, curious as to what Eirina planned to do with this new found information. Would she have anything to say? Perhaps tell him something he didn't know? She was a woman though, she'd probably be too focused on sentimental details. Of course she would. He could tell just by the look on her face. He stood up, gathering his things once again as he turned to the door, "Well, it is getting rather late. I think it best if I got some sleep, Headmistress." As he reached the door, he turned back to face her, awaiting for permission to leave. And for the door to be unlocked.
