| A tan and brown owl landed on the windowsill, hooting and scratching at the glass to be let in from the cold, a roll of parchment tied to one leg. | |

| It was quite quiet at the moment. No one was skipping class as they waited for Beauxbaton and Durmstrang to arrive and the few students that were in the Hospital Wing were napping, reading or chatting to each other. He knew how bored people could get while ill and put them all next to each other rather then having them strain themselves too much as they combated their boredom. His robes were still a bit stiff and starchy for his taste but there had been no robes for a male Head Nurse when Derek had arrived. This new order chaffed against the back of his neck and he was forced to unbutton a few buttons just to breathe without getting a rash around his throat. When he made his rounds, the collar shifted with each step he took and he had to just hope that the House-elves would be able to help when he had time to call on them for it. Maybe tonight. As he turned, it rubbed even more harshly against his skin. Definitely tonight after the feast.
The owl's tapping at the window grabbed his attention and he hurried over to let it in before the students started craning their necks to see what it was. Very bad considering one person was in a neck-brace. A small gust of air rushed in as it opened enough for the owl to come in. He left the window open. The room needed a bit of fresh air anyways.

| The owl walked onto the desk and held out her leg with the parchment attached. - Spoiler:
Dear Derek, Sorry it's taken me so long to write to you, I figured you'd be busy getting ready and then settled at Hogwarts. (Also Merlin there are a lot of envelopes in one box.) Anyway, if you've ever got a few hours free and can leave the castle, I can give you a tour of Hogsmeade or something. (Sorry, not entirely sure how often you're needed as a healer.) My address is below, owl me anytime and I'll see if I can Apparate over! Mary Black
PS- The owl may or may not hang around. I'm borrowing her from a friend, send her home tomorrow if she doesn't leave immediately.
((You can say if the owl leaves or not))

| He swiftly untied the letter from the owl's leg, quite glad that it had chosen to land away from the neat pile of paper on his desk. Derek really preferred his paperwork to be free of owl prints and feathers, not to mention the chance that someone who later handled it could be allergic or asthmatic which would not end very well at all. Fortunately, none of his current patients were allergic to owls or asthmatic and so receiving mail while working made him feel a little less guilty. Maybe he shouldn't go to the feast after all. But then this would be the first Triwizard tournament he'd ever seen and Derek didn't want to miss that. Besides, all the staff were supposed to be present and he had been assured by the house-elves that some would keep watch over the patients and summon him at any signs of trouble.
Sadly, he didn't have any owl treats and ended up giving the owl a bit of chicken from his lunch. It deserved a reward for doing it's job well after all. The Healer grinned as he saw who the letter was from. Since it had been a while since they met, Derek had vaguely wondered if she lost his post-box number. At least she knew he would be here when the school semester began.
He wrote out a quick reply before re-attaching it to the owl's leg and sending it off to Mary. His handwriting wasn't the best, but he did try to be more legible then usual.- To Mary Black:
Hello Mary,
It's great to hear from you again! And I have to admit that you were right about your conclusions. Getting used to working here has been quite a change, it's almost the reverse of when I first became a Healer. Speaking of which, how's the bar doing? I've always wondered if it's more quiet when the academic year starts then during the summer. (Ah, well I wouldn't know that because I 'borrow' office supplies for my letters.)
That really kind of you and I'll be sure to take you up on that offer soon. I've got some free time coming up this weekend and perhaps we could meet at Honeyduke's again on Saturday at noon? After that though, I imagine I'll be quite busy. The Triwizard tournament is going to start soon and I'll be needed at each trial on top of my usual duties.
If anything comes up, be sure to owl me! You're the one doing me a favor here after all.
Thanks, Derek Noble.
