Late afternoon shone with gentle warmth that was no longer summer, but not yet fully autumn either. Heavy drapes that hung over the windows blocked out the view of the setting sun. The only proof that it was not yet night were traces of light that found way behind the curtains; and illuminated the specks of dust that danced throughout the entire classroom, invisible except where the sunlight touched. The classroom was not darkened, however. Candles burned brightly on the iron chandeliers that hung above old wooden desks, enchanted so the wax did not drop, and yet shining with a very natural glow. There was enough light for a human eye to see by, and much too much for a vampire’s sensitive cornea.
Sorrow lingered in the shadow behind his desk. His lips pulled into a tight line as he examined the notes he had made on the blackboard. It was not much for class summary, but it held information such as class requirements and homework material. In his mind he went over his class materials again and again, trying hard to remember if he had forgotten something. On the outside he gave off an air of calm and grace, nothing unlike the usual. On the inside raged a storm that came with every beginning of his Hogwarts years; that much had not changed even with him becoming a professor. It meant getting used to students all over again, and carefully picking apart those who showed interest in his subject from those who did not. It meant another year of late homework and unjustified absences from class. But it meant learning and teaching, and learning through teaching. Just for that, Sorrow thought he could tolerate all the rest. Just for those few individuals who would listen and express their interest through good work.
The lock on the classroom's door clicked open as minutes marked the beginning of his class. Sorrow turned his back on the blackboard and turned to face the entrance, quietly expecting the first of the fifth year students.

| The first sign of a student coming to class was the bristles on the end of Emma's broomstick, followed by the girl herself. She had her book for class, but she just hadn't the time to go put away her broom; losing track of time out on the Quidditch field did that. She really hoped the Professor didn't mind.
Speaking of the devil, he'd made quite an eerie classroom environment. Emma looked around, wide-eyed, and finally looked at Professor Grace, "Hey, uh, is it okay if I leave my broom at the door?" She smiled on the outside, but on the inside she feared this Professor would be strict about it.
It wasn't as though she had any reason to believe he would be, Emma just simply got the vibe, what with the curtains drawn and nothing but candle light to fill the room. On top of that, the Professor sat in shadows. What else was a kid like her supposed to assume?

| Matthew hadn't been out chasing insects for once, but still he managed to come in late, pockets full of funny-looking pebbles. No one needed to know that, though. The kids that had run outside after their classes had ended, avoided him in a wide enough circle; and Matt knew that collecting pebbles at the lake shore was not something that he ought to be seen doing.
Yet after five years at Hogwarts, he still collected the pebbles. It had become tradition, a ritual he did at the beginning of each new month. Those pebbles would be set on the night-stand next to his bed and they would collect bad dreams. Then Matthew would throw them away, as far over the lake as he possibly could, until they sunk and the ripples faded. And he would find new pebbles.
It wasn't just his actions that drew attention. Over the past summer, Matthew had grown in height, and his features assimilated a slightly more mature expression. Not his eyes, though; his eyes still danced with a childish light. And in this new body he felt uncomfortable. It seemed too long and too clumsy; and he didn't know what to do when girls pointed at him and giggled. Auntie said he was handsome now, that he was growing to be a real man. Matthew thought that was silly. He had seen real men on auntie's old television, and none of them liked to chase insects or collect pebbles.
The classroom was darker than Matthew had expected it to be. He noticed the long drapes that blocked out light and immediately decided he hated them. Anyway, wasn't Herbology a class that was supposed to be held outside? The classroom was big, but it felt narrow and awfully confining. Matthew took a seat in the back and looked over the heads of other students, his eyes searching for the professor. He found him barely out of the shadow of the front and wondered again why professor Grace chose to stay in the dark so often. There were rumours in the castle halls that told that the pale professor was in fact a vampire, but Matthew never believed them.

| The start of the new term year for Eleanie was uneventful just like the previous year. Still people avoided her like she was an inferius. The only difference now and then was she was one year older and she already got her first detention slip. It was during Devination while looking at star charts to foretell the future. While working in pairs with another Gryffindor, she told her partner that her parents would die this month because Venus and Mars were in conflict with each other. This made her partner burst into tears drawing the attention of the professor.
Now she was off to Herbology with Professor Grace. Her mood was indicative of the atmosphere Professor Grace set dark and dreary with a dash of claustrophobia. Still see stood in the door way taking it all in, before once again taking her place in the back of the classroom, near were shadows dwelled. She did not search for any friends to sit by, because she had none, Friends were useless, but she did see familiar faces. Emma who was a Gryffindor in her year, and a slytherin boy who she might had multiple classes with. They were all there to learn, not fraternize, or so Eleanie concluded as she took out her material.
Kaden bustled in the Herbology still in his quidditch uniform on. His robes were thrown over his shoulder. Sweat dripped off his forehead and soaking his shirt. He took a quick scan of the room before spotting who he came to see. Emma, who was in the deep in what looked more like a conclave than a classroom, still clinging to her broom and book bag was the person he came to find. “Hey Emma. Why did you not wait for me?” he said casually, approaching from the otherside so she did not whack him with the broom as she turn around.

| It was a shame to waste such a nice day in class. Travis had even considered skipping out of Herbology in order to laze around hidden spots in the grounds where no professor would find him. However, since it was the first class he dragged himself into the building, his mood darkening as he thought about what a waste of time he was in for.
Upon entering the classroom he thought he had walked into the wrong place. It took a moment for his eyes to adjust to the darkness and see the other students sitting quietly at the desks. Great, he thought. I can't even see in here. What's this professor thinking?
Travis took a seat as close to the door as possible, letting his bag drop to the floor with a loud thump.

A small smile tugged at the edge of Sorrow's lips. His appearance had to be slightly intimidating, though he certainly hadn't meant to make it so. This too was a part of getting used to Hogwarts after a summer at his manor. What came naturally to him always drew discomfort in students, even as he tried to fix the atmosphere, to appeal to them. On occasion it worked, but it usually took some weeks and several classes until they all got used to each other again. Hardest were the first years; they never trusted him until well into the end of the first semester. Sometimes not even then.
He dared step forward to show himself in the light; to show he was not merely a part of the shadow, but made of solid flesh. Nodding to the student in the back, Sorrow recognized Emma Hawkwood. She had grown, but she still had wind in her hair. After her came the boy, Kaden, was it? He would have tempted a frown, but Sorrow had no desire to scold him. This time.
“Of course, Miss Hawkwood, it is quite all right,” he offered a pale smile in turn to her own. Sorrow never followed Quidditch, but he recognized the excitement that came with every game and learned to forgive lateness, stray brooms and muddy footprints. He wasn’t sure what position Emma or Kaden played. He never knew what it meant to be a chaser or a keeper and he knew what a snitch was only from what he read in books. One time he watched a match it made him queasy. It was a part of Hogwarts that he never truly experienced. “Mr Carr, if you would, please take a seat. We shall begin shortly.” Eleanie had already taken her seat, so Sorrow acknowledged her with a nod.
And then there was Matthew. Now there was a boy that made Sorrow’s odd habits pale in comparison! He had changed a lot over the summer, but the scent of soft earth was still sharp around him. One of those that showed interest in Herbology, too. Sorrow made no comment on his lateness as the boy quietly took his place in the back of the class. This time.
“First let me welcome you to another year of Herbology. As you know, this year we continue to make our list of herbs used in Potions, as well as further study into the useful application of water plants. Sadly, we have only two practical classes set in this year’s Study and Care; but you are always welcome to visit the Greenhouses, as long as I am there, for further study of our plants.”
Sorrow cast an eye over the classroom, giving pointed looks to all those that might think of going into the Greenhouses when he is not present. “Now, as this is your OWL year, you are welcome to ask questions and ask for materials that might help you study. I will hold consultations each Monday,” he motioned towards the blackboard, where his words stood written, “At 1:00 PM, in this very classroom.”
“Today we begin with a double-period. After Herbs in Potions II you will have a twenty-minute break to please all your needs. Then we shall continue with Introduction to Water Plants II. However this schedule is not final, and you will be alerted of the possible changes in due time.”
The loud thump made Sorrow turn his attention to the back of the class again. His eyes sharpened at Travis; his voice turning a shade colder as he spoke again.
“Ready your books, please. One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi.”

| Emma's smiled widened as Professor Grace gave her the okay, and she set her broom down at the back of the classroom. She then turned to Kaden with an 'innocent' shrug. "I thought you were right behind me." She gave a mischievous smirk.
As Professor Grace began the class, she took her seat at the front of the class, seeing as everyone else apparently wanted to be as far away as possible. She gleamed up at him cheerfully as he explained the agenda for the new semester. Emma never had much interest in Herbology, but she would overlook that minor detail for a kind Professor any day. That, and her mother told her she needed as many OWL's as she could get. Emma should have never told her mom what OWL's were in the first place.
Still, the thought was amusing, but she looked back to see if Kaden would be sitting in the front as well. She didn't want to be the only one, after all, and teammates stick together, right?

| Matthew kept his eyes on the front, neither looking for familiar faces nor thinking he might find any if he searched. He recognized Kaden's voice though, a tint different from the time at the owlery, but his all the same. It registered somewhere in the back of Matthew's mind; something he'd probably remember a while late and perhaps notice only as he sat outside on the grass and watched the moon rise. Such was his mind, working out of time and out of place; and always in association of something completely unrelated.
He tried to listen to professor Grace as he spoke, but his voice was low and soothing, nearly putting him to sleep. Plus, Matthew wasn't sure he could sit through a double-period, even with the twenty minute break. There would be difference in class, but all in this room, with candlelight flickering and casting shadows at the walls and light outside disappearing without them ever noticing. Maybe professor Grace really is a vampire. Matthew squinted at the pale face and snorted to himself. He would be different from those Matt saw in films, though. And he certainly wouldn't be teaching Herbology!
Matthew's book was already out and he poked at it with the little finger of his left hand; then took it with both hands and opened at a random page. He could barely sit still while waiting for further instructions.

| Emma had that smug look about herself, and Kaden knew why. During the Gryffindor Quidditch practice, the whole team was doing flying maneuvers with multiple bludgers set loose. They were doing fairly well dodging each and every bludger until Kaden flew a few feet behind Emma. One of the bludgers shot off toward her to her right. She performed a spectacular barrel roll and it missed her, but Kaden never saw it coming and struck him on the side of the arm, giving him a nice purple bruise. He wore it proudly though.
Kaden was about to retort, but Professor Grace asked him to take his seat. “Yes Professor.” He waited for Emma to put her broom towards the back of the classroom, before together they took the seat in front of the class, where he draped his robes over the corner of his desk so they would be out of the way.
Even sitting in front of the classroom, Professor Grace voiced was a mire whisper. He had trouble hearing the instructions he was being told but got the gist of it as he opened his copy of One thousand Herbs and Fungi textbook. He flipped through random pages, waiting for a page number. Numerous times he found scrap pieces of paper in the folds of the pages with written notes from friends or girlfriend all from last year. He read a few of them, smirking ever so slightly remembering his past, and looking forward to the future.
Eleanie book sat in front of her already, waiting for further instructions.

| (Note: You can find some of the books, One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi included, linked in the Herbology Syllabus! Have fun scrolling xD)
As the final of whispers settled and the classroom fell silent, Sorrow’s voice carried a bit louder throughout the chamber. It was purposeful, that he began quietly at first, because it meant that those students who wanted to hear would listen. In any case, it had worked last year. Sorrow could only hope that it ensured careful attention this year as well.
“We continue with the following Chapter: A List of 150 Herbs Commonly Used In Potions. Part six. Miss Carr, please read the summary on Juniper.”
His gaze carried from the students in the front to those in back, the steely grey of his eyes acknowledging every individual that had their focus on the front. One or two that did not must have felt him looking, because they promptly dropped their distractions and picked up their books instead. And then there was Matthew. Squirming in his seat as if he had flobberworms in his pockets, he drew another smile from Sorrow. These past years he would barely make it through to the end of his classes, even as he showed interest in Herbology. Double-periods had to be a nightmare; not just for Matthew, but for all those who found the subject uninteresting too.
It made Sorrow happy, however, to see Emma following his words with what seemed to be a new-found interest. Perhaps it was just the way he presented the class, but Sorrow hoped that this year he could make it entertaining, as well as informative.

| “Please Professor, call me ‘L.’” For years she tried to wash the disdain of holding onto her first and last name. It brought up very distasteful memories that should be left forgotten. Also, she spent these few years disassociating herself from her brother. She did not want to let her stigma wash over onto Kia or vice versa. That is why she had a tendency to correct even the professor, those who acknowledges the relationship between Kaden and herself.
Of course, Kaden thought to himself hearing the detest in her little sister voice as she corrected the professor. Recently he had to backtrack and explain why they have common last names to those curious enough to ask. The most convincing story he sticks to is that the Carr family is huge and related in some form like Pure Blood families in the wizarding world. He brushes off that she is a distance cousin (like 6th cousins twice removed) to satisfy his promise to Eleanie.
She flipped open her textbook easily to the page and read the passenger in her monotone voice that she could muster to fend off looking like she was interested. “Juniper: Juniperus communis. Use the fruit in a dried form from this plant. It works well for digestion issues or can help ease colic in the little ones.”
For Kaden, Herbology was the most difficult of subjects that he struggle with. Even with his wits, which he believe was above average, he could not see how a simple Juniper commonus…or whatever could be used for digestion.

| Emma was good at paying attention to what the Professor was saying, but once she had to do more than one thing at a time, she got a bit clumsy and disorganized. As she opened her book up, another one fell on the floor, so while she had to pick it back up, she'd run behind on getting to the same page as the class.
Once she did, however, she glanced over at Kaden's book to make sure she was right, and then looked back up at Professor Grace, wearing an apologetic smile. There wasn't much that could be done for her lack of such grace as the Professor- no pun intended (really, I couldn't think up a synonym xD). Her skills were outside, on the Quidditch field, not in a classroom with her nose in a book.

| Matthew didn’t waste time flipping the pages to the said chapter. His eyes fell over the inky lines in the textbook and he half-listened to Eleanie’s voice as she read, half-listened to the voice inside his head as he read the lines himself. The summary didn’t say much about the plant, but Matt expected elaboration would soon follow. There was more text in the book, and pictures too. The summary was something that they would refer to later, as the part most important for the plant’s use in Potions. Everything else was, well, Herbology. | |

| Professor Grace directed everyone to open their books up to part six of some chapter Travis didn't recall ever having read part 1-5 of. He probably hadn't, and had not desire to start now. He picked up his book as the professor glanced at the back of the classroom and flipped it open to whatever page it landed on. If someone in the class was reading it out loud why should he even have to have his book open? He let his eyes glaze over as the girl read on. A long class was ahead of him and he had plenty of day dreams and things to occupy his mind while ignoring the subject. | |

The request came again as it did each year; and Sorrow could not help but feel a note of pain in his mind for both Eleanie and Kaden. He never knew what it was that made the twins so far apart from one another’s mind. Sorrow, being a twin himself, could understand the pain of being separated from his twin. There was a time when the link between him and Misery had been lost, repaired, and for a time lost again. But each time their souls drifted back to one another. They could never stay apart for long. They were brother and sister, intimately connected through the time shared in their mother’s womb. For that reason, Sorrow could not begin to imagine what disorder there was in the hearts of young Carrs. He never called Eleanie as she wanted him; not only because it was inappropriate, but because he felt about it stubbornly too. Their files stated in clear ink that they were of the same mother. Never should there be such disorder between twins.
“Thank you, Miss Carr,” he tried to sound light when he spoke again, though thought of Misery still weighed heavy on him. He hadn’t seen her in a while now. She hadn’t been home this past summer, only visited once. Sorrow himself had rather busied himself at the manor than going up to Zillah’s on more than one occasion.
“Junipers are coniferous plants in the genus Juniperus of the cypress family Cupressaceae. Depending on taxonomic viewpoint, there are between fifty and sixty-seven species of juniper. However, we shall focus on the basic characteristics and uses of the common juniper, as that is the one we use in potions. Firstly, it is important that you learn to recognize the juniper plant. Refer to the picture in your textbooks,” Sorrow lifted his own copy, turning it towards the students and showing the picture with a gentle tap of his finger. The common juniper was little more than a shrub. On the picture next to it, it appeared as a small coniferous evergreen tree. Its appearance often varied, but in essence it stayed a low spreading shrub. Occasionally it could reach ten meters in height, but such occurrences were rare.
“As you can see, the plant has needle-like leaves in whorls of three. They are green in colour, with a single white stomata band on the inner surface. Male and female cones stand on separate plants, which means the juniper is dioecious and wind pollinated. Male cones are yellow, two to three millimetres in length, and they fall soon after shedding their pollen. This can happen at any time in March and April.”
“The seed cones are berry-like and green as the leaves. It takes eighteen long months until they are ripe. By then they should have reached a purple, sometimes nearly black colour inside; and a waxy blue coating. The berries are spherical and rather small, ranging from four to twelve millimetres in diameter. They usually have three fused scales, each with a single seed. The seeds are dispersed when birds eat the cones, digesting the fleshy scales and passing the hard seeds in their droppings.”
Sorrow lowered his book, replacing it with a glass jar that had until that moment stood on his desk. The jar held nearly two dozen of the berries, blue and dried. “Mixing of various ingredients that is required in the art of potion making can sometimes be rather troublesome for our digestion system. Because of this, we add juniper berries to certain potions in order to prevent these problems. Most commonly used are those of the common juniper. However, their potency in a potion can be determined by further studying into subspecies of the juniper plant.”
“Is everything clear so far?”

| If the Professor had been speaking English, than Emma's understanding of it was severely lacking. The more detail he went into about plants and trees and stuff, the more vacant Emma's expression became. It wasn't intentional, that she stared at him wide-eyed in befuddlement, but for her first class of the year, she hadn't expected so many big words. She could understand it, but her mind was outside in the warm, sunny sky, no matter how much she refused to look to the drawn curtains.
She didn't want to slow the class down, however, so instead, she looked down at her book and began reading what Eleanie had read out loud. At least that much made sense. She would just have to review the material after class, maybe outside, in the shade of a big, big tree. The thought was nice. Yeah, she totally had this! The motivational thought of going outside brought another smile to her face, as she looked back up at the Professor.

| Matthew played with his quill before deciding to dip it into ink and starting to take notes. He wrote in tiny letters and he squeezed words close to one another. The quill scratched against the parchment and the parchment made tiny noises, as if protesting against the violation of its smooth, yellowed surface. Matt watched the pictures in his textbook with reserved interest and drew the little berries along the edges of his notes. He added a line to what the professor had called a stomata band. He drew a bird too and illustrated the droppings that held the seeds, and an arrow from it that pointed at the juniper.
Not everything was clear, but Matthew supposed that professor Grace had presented the most important information in form of one: recognizing the plant from the picture, and two: knowing its proper use. He asked no questions, satisfied with his little drawings.

| Eleanie was perturbed that Professor Grace could not follow this one request, but she would keep her tongue civil and not say anything else about it.
He stared at the blackboard blankly, trying to soak up the continuous information that Professor Grace was giving. At first he thought the material Eleanie read off was difficult to fathom, but as the Professor prattle away he was downright confused. Herbology was never his strong suit seeing as how he did not have an ounce of a green thumb like his mother or his sister, but this was impossible to keep straight in his head.
He turned towards Emma to see if she understood any of that, but she looked worse off than he felt. What did they got themselves into? The book was useless as well, and any information Kaden gleamed off of it was the picture.
Unlike her brother, she followed along well with what Professor was mentioning about the Juniper plant. Her hand blazed across her parchment noting down most if not all the information he mention in that short time span. It was sloppy, but she was tempting to rewrite her notes anyways after class.

“Good then,” Sorrow decided as no hand rose in question. “I hope you made notes, there will be a quiz,” there was a glint in his eye that told that he was not completely serious. “In the meantime, let us read about the next plant. Miss Hawkwood? Kantakari is all yours.”

| Emma straightened up in her chair, tickled to have a chance to contribute to the class. It made her feel somewhat useful, and it let her put that trifling doubt to the back of her mind. She looked over the first few words, before she cleared her throat. She spoke as clearly as she could so the other students would actually understand what came out of her mouth.
"Kantakari; smart people call it Solunum... zantho...carpum," she grinned, but continued, "the roots, flower, and stem of the plant are all used for medicine. Healers use it in potions for people with asthma, or fever.. and in poultices to prevent itching."
She gave herself a curt nod as though telling herself she did an awesome job, and then she shot a thumbs up at Kaden before smiling back up at the Professor. It made a lot more sense when Emma put things into her own words, despite how silly she may have sounded. She still understood what she said out loud, so she was happy.

| (I apologise for rushing these last posts; I'll make a pause here and continue tomorrow, so please join me again at your earliest convenience. A big thanks to everyone attending! You guys have been so great thus far! o.q)
Sorrow let the jar with the juniper berries rest on the desk as he picked up the textbook again. “And thank you Miss Hawkwood. Kantakari is indeed very useful in medicine, though it is not commonly used outside India. But should you ever find yourselves in India, well,” again Sorrow tapped with his finger to indicate a picture. “Kantakari belongs to family Solanaceae. You will find it waste places, on roadsides and in open scrublands. It is a prickly, usually spreading or diffused perennial, woody at base. The young branches are densely covered with minute star-shaped hairs. The branches zigzag, and spread close to the ground are covered with yellow, sharp, shining prickles. The flowers are purple, about two centimetres long. The fruits are globular drooping berries, up to two centimetres in size, yellow or pale in colour with green veins.”
“Kantakari is bitter and pungent in taste, and has hot potency. It possesses light and dry attributes. It has enjoyed an important place among medicinal herbs since ancient times. Its use has been noted mostly by wizards of India. Here it is used rarely, and then only by Healers or those dealing in production of Healing potions. Caraka and Susruta, the great sages, have mentioned the plant to have multiple medicinal properties. Acarya Vagbhata has adored it as a drug of choice for cough. It can be crushed into poultices to reduce itching or mixed into potions to treat fever.”

| Again Matthew followed the lines in his textbook, reading to himself, and half-listening to the new voice that read them aloud. He looked up in time to see the girl in the front smile a smile brilliant as sunlight. The corners of his mouth tugged at one as well.
He listened to professor Grace elaborating on this new plant, making short notes as he did before. Judging from the summary that was written on the blackboard, they had two more plants to mention before the end of the hour and the very much desired twenty-minute pause.

| Emma smiled, trying to hold back a laugh as Sorrow took her reading so seriously. She hadn't even done that. She looked down at her book, staring at the white corners of the page so she could listen. She heard him better when she had nothing to distract her eyes, though she only really absorbed some key parts from what he said. Whatever she thought was important. | |

| The slow, steady whisper of Professor Grace was out matched by the quills scratching against parchment, and the stray noises of pages being flipped or someone stifling a yawn. It was no wonder Kaden fell slowly behind, as attempt to jot down notes. Without one word, Kaden wrote down scrolled on the side of his parchment paper that was suppose to be used for notes but instead he wrote, 'Do you understand any of this?' and moved it slightly so both Kaden and Emma could see it. | |
